I tried to turn on the machine today and the whole screen is black. It didn't even load the BIOS. The machine is on though. I can tell because the lights are on. What's going on? Did the Mobo/screen die?

Thanks. Called HP and they said it would cost $450 CDN to fix... Kinda absurd especially when this is a well known issue.

Anyway, it's actually my sister's laptop. She still has 7 more payments to make for her laptop. Is it possible to retrieve the data from the hard drive? Is it possible to use the hard drive on my Dell m1330?

my sister's laptop (tx1000) had a faulty nVidia chip as well. HP didn't acknowledge the problem, but I was lucky enough to be able to buy a one-year warranty extension for $140, so they fixed the laptop (twice actually!). it's working right now, but i'm afraid it'll eventually fail. fortunately, it's still covered under warranty...

the first tech i talked to told me that he sent a report back to HP about this issue, as this particular model is not in their list of affected laptops. you better talk to them again and remind your service rep to send a note as well to someone higher up in the chain. if enough people call them about this issue, they will have to do something about it instead of ignoring people.

    good luck

Yes just buy an external USB enclosure and plug in the M1330.

Inserting the hard drive directly probably wont work because the OEM licence/drivers wasnt meant for that machine. It will most likely give you a NTLDR bootloader error.

I wouldn't say its dead so quick without doing more troubleshooting on it. The Nvidia chipsets are bad for this but at least give it a chance. Remove the battery, unplug the AC adapter and hold the power button down for 30 seconds. May not work but at least its worth a try. Go get an external HDD dock (some guys call them toasters) heres a link. http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153066
