Okay, I came across a random thread that already asked this question- but never found a resolution. The problem I'm having right now is the thing just shuts off. I'm assuming it's an over-heating issue, but I am also wondering if it could be something else. Computer less than six months old- I'm pretty taxing on it, but find that it shuts off when I'm playing ridiculous windows-based games like Farm Frenzy. It gets insanely hot, like while playing a windows game, I had it on my lap... I have a burn in the shape of my laptop, right through my jeans, on my legs, lol.
Also, I don't know if this is in any way related, but the charger that it came with blew like a week ago. Whenever I'd put my ear up to it, it'd tick. I don't know if maybe a short somewhere can cause something like that to happen.
My biggest issue now is I'm wondering if this is something I should have looked into- (I have a 3-year warranty). Or is this me just buying a crappy laptop and having to buy one of those cooling fans.
Okay... anyone who can help, that'd be awesome...![]()
Thank you!

download HWmonitor to check the temperatures. Another thing, when you've got the laptop on your lap make sure you arent' covering the fan hole on the bottom of the laptop or it will suffocate.

It doesn't matter if you cover the vents, the laptop can also take air from going through the plugs on the side.
Definitely an overheating issue, if its under warranty send it in. -

Send it in. Various brands/models of laptops have had problems with quality control in that too much thermal paste is used during production. Too much thermal paste inside will lead to overheating problems.
Certain production runs of Macbooks were found to have this, for example.
Worth investigating.
My DV5T stays pretty cool. -
As far as the vents go, I've been sitting with a board in my lap so it's the equivalent of being on a desk. It's still shutting off. I downloaded the program to test the temperature, but
A) I'm not even sure what a stable temperature is... and
B) I'm usually playing a game that takes up the entire screen when I play it, so I don't know what the temperature is when it shuts off... I will say this though, if I try to turn it on immediately after it shuts off, it'll shut off in the middle of start-up. So I'm figuring it has to be overhearting, as it seems to need to cool off.
I'm going to have to send it in, I'm just dreading how long it's going to take to get it fixed. I have to say, I'm like 150% dissatisfied with this since I got the thing. I got it with 64-bit Vista, it's buggy as hell, it crashes constantly. If I try to control the volume with my finger on the computer itself, it clicks, never stops... and then every 30 seconds, the little window pops up on my screen telling me it's changing the volume... so it's not even about ignoring annoying clicks as much as an annoying pop-up.
Thanks so much to everyone who wrote!!!! You've all been a big help!!!
