    Greetings all!

I'm working on a dv9815 for a friend. She says it won't charge, tried a new battery and won't charge that either. I haven't seen any error codes on boot, nor was it flashing any code when plugged in like my Dell does (won't charge battery either, but that's another story... and a different section).

BestBuy wants to install a new motherboard. Is that what it needs? If so, does anyone have a lead on where to find new parts for a 3yr. HP at a decent price?

Don't repair a 3 year old laptop, just buy a new one.

It isn't mine, and she doesn't have the money to spend on a new 17" laptop right now.

I would prefer to tell her to get a new one, but she just can't.

Correction: it is a dv9700, service tag is dv9815nr. Can't seem to find the model #.

You can get new mobo off ebay. If you are handy, you can do the work yourself and save her a fair bit of coin.

    Here's the service manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01951704.pdf

It will have all relevant part numbers plus detailed instructions for repair.

Thanks for the manual 2.0. I already tore it apart to see if it had a separate charging board, or if the charging unit was on the mobo... and it is. They put a hell of a lot of screws in this thing, and I had to take the screen off just to get at the mobo.

Found a few on eBay from $125 to $150, but also found one at GetParts Online.com for $94.99 new. I think BB wanted to charge her $250~ just for the part, and another $150~ to put it in. I can do it for $150... not too bad.

Oh, Lithus... the reason she doesn't want to spring for a new one right now is because she's saving the money for a MacBook Pro, which is what I suggested to her in the first place... but it will take her at least a year to get one, so this one has to do for now.

Best of luck to you then. It's good that you are handy in this regard. The price they charge for repair is nutty.
