Got a question for you guys.
Well, just bought an HP 8510p yesterday and I can't say I'm entirely impressed. I'm a stickler for screen quality, and guess what? Expecting the WSXGA screen to be brighter/sharper than the one on my previous 14.1" 6515b (which was utterly superb... the only good thing about the machine IMHO), not only was I dissapointed to notice the screen to be noticeably dimmer, whites left a lot to be desired, being slightly pinkish under all light conditions. What's more, left and right bottom corners are improperly lit (?). Another thing I noticed, the machine tends to produce a loud rattling/clicking sound whenever the system boots. Upon further inspection, the sound comes from the DVD-RW drive area (might actually be the fans?).
So what I'd like to ask is this: are all these problems normal?![]()
I'd seriously consider getting another machine if it is.
-
So I managed to fix the color innaccuracy problem via ATI's Catalyst Control, but still, I'm certain there's something wrong with the screen. Every color has a pinkish tint to them and it's annoying to say the least. You know what sucks even more, the store where I bought it wouldn't take the notebook back because it isn't considered a lemon. Pure BS if yoi ask me.
-
I'd like to know this also. I have been considering a 8510p for the longest and was waiting to order one by next paycheck.
-
I've had my 8510p since Wednesday, and I have to say that the screen quality issue you're describing is definitely abnormal. Not only is my screen evenly lit, but the colour is gorgeously neutral (not overly warm or overly cool) -- more so than my ViewSonic vp2030b and I thought that *it* was accurate. It's just a shame that I have a couple dead subpixels on the top left hand side less than 1.5" away from each other.
Brighter screen than I thought it would have, though.
I got the wierd sound out of the DVD-ROM drive during a reboot once so far. My guess is that it's probably just the head resetting. I suppose that's just how this particular model of drive operates. Hardly a concern in my opinion at this point.
I'd get that screen issue looked at, though. Just for kicks and giggles, you could check the video output with an external monitor. Won't solve anything, but it's investigative -
I have the predecessor to the 8510w (the nw8440) with the WUXGA screen (the one above the WSXGA+), and yeah, the screen isn't all that great. I don't notice a pinkish tinge so much is that all the colors are very cold looking (too "blueish"/too much blue; easily fixable in Catalyst) and the brightness level leaves much to be desired.
The brightness level is actually perfect...if you set the screen at max brightness. Anything below that is utterly unusable unless you're in a very dark environment.
Do me a favor: I'm curious to find out the mfgr. of the LCD panel. To do that, go to Start->Control Panel->System. Click the Hardware tab, then click the Device Manager button. Expand the "monitors" tree, and right click on "Plug and Play Monitor" and select properties. Click on the "details" tab. Make sure the drop down menu is set to "Device Instance ID". Below, it should say "DISPLAY\XXX.....\.....", Where "XXX" is the 3-letter code for who made the display.
A short list of Codes:
AUO=AU Optronics
QDS = Quanta
LPL= LG electronics (?)
SEC= Samsung
I wouldn't be surprised if yours had an SEC/Samsung Display. SEC displays aren't exactly the best quality (Mine's an SEC).
Also, try testing a disc in the optical drive to hear what that sounds like, just for good measure. -
About the DVD-RW drive, weirdly enough, it's not at all loud when it's reading a disc. -
The QDS screens aren't that great from my experience. LPL used to be the best on the nx8420/nc8430 range.
-
Yea call HP for a screen replacement. Might want to add on-site service. Someone had a Link for 129$ at CDW. Grab that and you have to wait 7 days. Then go ahead and give them a call.
-
I believe the dark corners problem is prevalent in most notebooks due to uneven backlighting. -
Haven't had any issues with uneven backlighting or colours being off. My DVD drive does clunk randomly when rebooting but never cold booting.
According to Teraforce, my screen is also Quanta. However someone looked up my screen's serial number and claimed it was Samsung. Oh well -
I'm *pretty* sure that QDS is quanta, though I can't be sure. SEC is definitely Samsung and only Samsung, though. The 3-letter codes can only correspond to one mfgr.; Therefore, Samsung screens are *always* indicated by SEC.
And, at least with the Pavilions, QDS are usually the best screens, SEC the worst, and LPL and AUO (AOU?) falling in between. -
-
Yeah my buddy must have been wrong then. I may have found a stuck pixel to go along with my dead one but frankly I can only find it half the time so I barely notice...
-
Where does my CMO fall?
-
-
No experience with them either. -
Well I have one. My screen is great, just its somewhat grainy due to the Matte coating on the screen. Otherwise its by far the best notebook screen I have personally used.
-
CMO does supply WSXGA+ screens.
However, do you have WUXGA screens from QDS? That would be a suprise, AFAIK only LG.Philips, Samsung, Toshiba and Matsu****a do WUXGA screens...
I have a Samsung, got it replaced once and will be replaced for the second timeIt simply has a dark spot (not pixel, bud an area of 1x1cm, which is a bit darker than the rest of the screen)...

.. Haven't read entire posts except the OP's first.
My 8510p just arrived today and I'm starting to wonder whether your screen has a defect. To be honest, I was looking at this post before it even arrived at my doorstep -- I think I made note of this a few days ago.
My screen is absolutely gorgeous and I'm very (read: EXTREMELY) impressed. No light leakage, can't find any dead pixels, it's beautiful. I'm not even sure if it's on 100% brightness because it's at factory settings right now -- but the brightness is a little.. TOO bright for me. It's beginning to become an eyesore.
I'm ridiculously satisfied with it. Just my two cents. -
lol
I get my 8510w on monday, hope I am "rediculously satisfied" with its screen.. -
My WSXGA is quantus. Very nice screen. Bright enough, good res size for the screen size (WUXGA gets stupid on a 15") with EXCELLENT viewing angles.
I think you'll be pleased Pongo. -
My 8510w is a CMO and I am very pleased. After coming from a Fujitsu, I was concerned that a lower brightness screen would be a dissapointment. However at full brightness it it "bright enoush, very even, excellent color and very sharp. wsxga.
Overall I an Very satisfied with the machine. -
I have 8510w with CMO display WSXGA+ and it is very bright... Too bright, so I use ALS...
-
Just checked. Mine is CMO WXSGA+ also and quite bright. I'm very pleased with it.
-
I have an awesome screen on my 8510p, its a Quanta.
-
I received my 8710W the other day and it has an LPLF700. It has a lot of light leakage (three quarters) at the bottom and a very small amount on top during POST. In Windows it looks great, but I have not tried gaming yet.
To me, the screen looks better than a T61P and has features a T61 can't even touch, though they could have used better hinges. -
gah my 8510w has a SEC and there's light leakage from the bottom but it's not too bad i guess.
-
Before they do, I'd like to demand the best screen possible... so does anyone have a recommendation for a 17" 1680x1050? Should I just say LG or Quanta (as these posts seem to indicate are good) or does the quality change between models - if so, which is the best model number to get?
Any advice appreciated, I know pretty much zip about this. -
QDS screen on all units of 8510w received so far. Excellent screen and much brighter than the previous generation nc8430.
-
Property Value
Hardware IDs Monitor\QDS003F
looks great , better than my last dell screen, bright no dead pix , colours look great -
Thanks for that. If they deliver QDS instead of LG I'll know not to worry. Anything SEC is going right back!

Hi!
I have just bought a hp 8510w (T7700, WUXGA screen) and there are some things puzzling me...
I have have somewhat solved the fan issue by putting the laptop in the "Power saving" profile, where the fan gets loud rarely.
But i'm experiencing some other kind of problems... One boot out of 10-15 fails, and the laptop just hangs half-way into booting Vista. All i can do is push the power button for 6 seconds, than it will start ok. I've upgraded to the BIOS to the latest version, but that does not take care of the hanging :-(
Has someone else experienced the failed boot problem with their 8510w?
Is there something to be done?
Thanks! -
Ubic , i have the same problem with my 8510-p , where every 10 or so boots it just freezes on the hp screen and i have to hold power button 6 sec and reboot . strange problem , but so far i can live with it .
any ideas what causes it ? i've run mem test and HD test with no problems showing up -
one cause could be a problem in the bios, for example 2 of the 5 or so bios updates so far for the 8510w have been made to address hangs of this type.
maybe this laptop has a bios update due for this issue? -
I'd suggest you take it in to be fixed, assuming you can duplicate the problem in front of someone. That is, spend their time on it not your own. I bought a HP8710p and returned it after some issues just couldn't be fixed, and had to spend 2 weeks not being able to use it. While HP's service is prompt, I'm not comfortable buying another one of their notebooks again.

@antic: i'm sorry for the trouble you had to go trough :-(
@jerry66: did you modify or remove the OS_TOOLS ( F: ) partition that was created by the windows install process? i removed it at some point, that added it back; maybe that has created the random boot freeze? I'm not betting on it because i guess that it would stop the laptop booting all times, not just some times, but i'm out of guesses on this one -
no i did not moddify OS_TOOLS , and everything is up to date . no idea why this happens . as long as it's only 1 out f 10 or so boots i will not worry o much
-
unfortunately that equals to a 10% chance to loose your work in progress if the freeze happens when trying to resume the computer from standby / hibernate :-(
-
i'm safe , i never use standby or hibernate , just have the screen go off after 10 min . other than that i leave running most the time

That is, you have do pull out the screws and look at the memory simm.
Please tell me the code on it.
I am curious if it is Micron.
For example on main is written:
MT16HTS25664HY-667E1
I am having the same problem and I suppose the memory is not ok eventhough the memory checking (found in BIOS) tells it is ok.
I think that there are some issues with the memory synchronization becuase if you look on the hp website
http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/e...Compaq 8510w Mobile Workstation&lang=en&cc=us
you can see that the add-on memory has different codes and I am pretty sure that is a different brand name. -
Could you please tell me what memory is inside ?

I'm sorry but my laptop crashed and i could not start it any more.
I took it to be serviced, and they told me that it has a problem with the memory and that it will get services and the memory changed.
So i guess it's the same problem you are having :-(
Sorry i cannot tell u the serial number thou -
CMO WXGA+ on HP 8510p is bright but VERY GRAINY .. quite unusable if you
use your computer more than 2h a day ...
Reference is CMO1520 .. try to avoid it -
too bad you caught a CMO-lemon. but there seem to be a lot of different screens for the 8510 series now.
i have the quanta lcd screen (wsxga+) , and that one is beautiful. just very little light leakage at the bottom, not grainy at all, and it´s bright enough too. i´m really happy with it. -
