    Hey everyone, noob here...

    Ordered a 5000t recently...

Stuck with Windows XP home edition
    Intel Core Duo T2500 (2.0GHz)
    15.4WXGA Brightview
    128MB Geforce 7400
    1x1024GB SDRAM
    100GB 5400rpm HD
    DVD+/-RW/R & CD-RW Combo w/Double Layer Support
    Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
    And an extra 6-cell battery

It's been awhile since I've had a laptop, so it'll be nice to have some portability again. I would have (ideally) liked a Turion processor with the ATI X700, but oh well. This should still be pretty good. I'm looking forward to some reviews popping up eventually (stupid build date) to see how it does. My last laptop (eons ago) was a Winbook with a 333MHz processor - I'm guessing this'll be quite a bit better. I'll have to let everyone know how it is (not like I really have any experience though)...

I think the 8000t would have been a bit cheaper - optioned about the same, but I need a little portability (for school) and this seemed like a reasonable compromise. I'm hoping the weight will be around a low 6 pound range, which should be do-able for my campus.

Edit - Oh yeah, whoops, I made it sound like I actually have it in the thread title. Stupid dialects. March 14th is the build date, I think...

Sounds exactly like the comfig that I have been thinking of. Plan on uping to 2-GB of memory, extra 12-cell, and getting the non-bright screen (use outdoors a lot).

If I may ask why the Intel based 5000 vs. AMD?

Probably because the only graphics solution on the HP/Compaq line of laptops with AMD processors is integrated.

As in...the 5000t vs. the 5000 with the Turion? I wasn't too sure about the ATI 200M graphics. I had orignally planned on a dv4000 with the X700 and a Centrino, but they changed their models about the exact day I wanted to order, so I waited and found the 5000t in the approximate price range that I had been looking at.

I think I would like a bit more RAM, eventually, which is why I picked the single stick of 1GB - I figure all I need to do from here is pick up one more from newegg and I'm set.

The 12 cell sounds really nice, though. They're getting incredible battery life on that thing. We'll have to see how the 6 cell fairs out for me.

Yeah, it kind of sucks. They're shooting themselves in the foot with that one (although, apparently not so much since I still purchased from them).

    So, question then...

If I do decide to pick up an additional 1GB of RAM (via one stick), does anyone know what, if any, brand HP uses so that I don't need to buy 2 new sticks? Or is it even possible to get their brand?

And, for clarification, it uses DDR SDRAM, at 533MHz...beyond that, I'm not sure specifically what the specs are I would need for the stick.

Rumor has it that Turion X2's arrive in May. I'd expect HP to be first in line, and it's likely that nVidia will finally cough up their Turion chipset by then.

Or availability could be tight at first so only the specialty notebook makers get them. Who knows? Regardless, HP had better offer GeForce 7600's with them.

Check out the memory speed section on the left (under the dv5000t heading). I thought they would use 667 given the new Duo Core, but maybe this was a cost saving feature.

In retrospect, I kind of regret buying the gig of ram option. I was thinking it would be good for allowing me to upgrade later, and I guess will to an extent, but not if I want to run 667Mhz. Oh well.

I don't, I'll have to do a little "review" when I get it. It was supposed to ship out yesterday (the 14th), but as of right now (8:00AM on the 15th) it still has not shipped out.

I'm glad I didn't fork over $75 for the 2-day shipping. A lot of good that would have done if it were getting here late anyway.

I just picked up the silver messenger bag on the site. Yeah, I know, I'm a tool of the industry. Now all I need is to get HP painted on the hood of my car. At any rate, at first I was looking through ebags.com (which you may want to check out), and I kind of regretted buying it. But, once I got it, it turns out to be a really nice bag. I tried putting a different laptop in (with similar dimensions) and it fits pretty nicely. Lots of padding, both in the bag and removable sleeve. A little bit of storage to bring along a thin text book or something, plus the usual pencil, cell phone, etc. pockets. It's made by Targus, I think I'm just going to rip off the HP label and leave it at that. Nice bag overall.

yep, you can. the napa platform/Intel 945PM chipset/core duo 667FSB supports it... they just run the 533 DDR2 SDRAM because it's also compatible AND cheaper...

i dunno if its worth the extra money for both of us. 533 to 667 isnt that much higher.. some1 is gonna have to benchmark it..

I could prob get 70 for my stick of 533.. then id have to buy 2 1gb sticks at 96.77 each.. So at least 130 for me. to go all with 667Mhz.. or another 80 to get another stick of 533.

dunno what you can get for yours.

Do you know if it affects performance to run different brands of memory? I don't know what HP uses, so if I pick up something from Crucial, Kingston, etc. will there be any performance decrease as compared to running 2 sticks fo the exact same kind?

Ok then, I got an email from HP telling me about the delay in shipment, which, obviously, I was already aware of. But, being the good sports they are, they have given me a $50 certificate good for any item, non-discounted, on their site.

The question is, then, what do I purchase? Note that in all of these choices, ordering them from HP will be more expensive than another site, but the $50 is more than enough to offset that difference.

    My considerations are...

    Logitech X-530 5.1, 70W speaker set...
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836121118
From HP, it'll cost me about $45 including tax, shipping, and the certificate. The same setup, inluding shipping and maybe tax, from newegg.com would be about $75. I don't have a 5.1 soundcard on my desktop, but it would be nice to have for a future desktop setup.

    The Logitech X-230 2.1, 32W speaker set...
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16836121119
From HP, after all is said and done, it'll be about $8. :D That setup from newegg would usually run me about $45. I already have speakers for my computer, just the stockers that came with the rig, so they're nothing special, but they're not horrible. I'd basically be trading up to a slightly nicer set of speakers, but mostly a subwoofer.

The final choice would be a set of noise cancelling head phones from HP...
    http://www.shopping.hp.com/webapp/shopping/product_detail.do?product_code=PM106A#ABA
These would run me about $20 after tax, shipping, and the certificate, and are the only things that would really benefit my laptop. I could probably find a comparable pair on newegg for around $40 to $50 shipped, but I'm not sure of the headphones' quality from HP. Still, the noise-cancelling feature is a definite plus.

So, I'm stuck. The 5.1 speaker setup is highly rated on newegg, and it's a good amount off from what I could normally get. The 2.1 setup is also highly rated, is applicable to my setup now, and dirt cheap. Finally, the head phones would probably benefit me the most right now, and they'd be nearly dirt cheap too.

Eh...not really sure. I don't really have or need any of it. I think I'm kind of leaning towards the headphones, but if I picked up a Soundblaster Audigy 2ZS notebook card later on, I could use the 5.1 speakers. Then again, I could use that with the headphones as well...

I think I'm going to have to mull this one over.

I ordered 2 of the 6 cell, the 12 cell is something like $100, or I would. I think the headphones will probably work best for me, and $20 isn't anything too bad.

warranty if you haven't bought it yet. Looks like mine got delayed since not shipped today, which will give me $50.00, already had $50.00 coupon from past order that was delayed, I am planning to get a warranty.

Not a bad idea. Unfortunately I've already ordered the headphones. Fortunately, they screwed up the order so I've already emailed them asking what's going on. Maybe I'll just cancel it and get the accidental damage warranty.
