I been looking at the HP DV4000 and the Compaq V4000T, and the process seems to be what bumps the prices up of these units the most.. Now I read a thread in the Dell forums (and other places) that it was possible to pin mod a 1.6 p-m 400fsb to 2.13 533. Has anyone attempted this with either of these machines? is it feasible if you choose the 1.6 400mhz processor they offer as an option? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't buy a computer just to void the warranty.

It should be quite possible. But yeah, you'll for sure void your warranty.

I'd say it is risky at best.

Agreed, but at the same time it's very intriguing. I'd never have the stones to try it myself, but that being said I'd love to hear if/how from someone who does.

Yes - pinmodding will void your warranty for sure. Not something that I'd be willing to risk.

But anyway, here is an excellent page on how to pinmod a Pentium M. ;)
