I've just got a brand new dv2000t 2.0GHz and 2.0GB.
Every thing is pretty fine up to now. EXCEPT...
You know .... the Touchpad ...
I got used to the glossy problem and it is ok with me, however,
the lower 35% area(or even more) of touchpad is HORIZONTALLY DEAD.
it means that I can move the cursor in this area left and right but not up and down...... even worse the cursor jumps like crazy when I slowly approach the virtual border line of this restricted area.

I used the Synaptics Graph option which shows finger movement in the touchpad... it clearly showed that I reached the bottom end of the touchpad... although I didn't !!
in the mouse Synaptics settings I tried both activating and deactivating the horizontal line ... but no success
I tried also removing synaptic but no change...
Is there a solution or I have to live with it ... or can I do a calibration or something??!!

Hi Superinfiniti,
Don't know if this will help but if you go to control panel, then Mouse, then select the Synaptic Touchpad from the device window, Then Device Settings, then Settings, then Pointer Motion, there is a list of properties that you can adjust including Edge Motion Region and Speed.
Hope this helps. -
uninstall the driver and then use MS driver try it out~ if it fix the problem~~ then post here to tell other people

Thanks guys for your help,
I tried almost every possible solution. I think it is a general issue, either hardware or software, or even both. I tried couple of other dv2000t and showed same problem.
I'm using the mouse anyway, but it is very annoying to know that there is a defect like this in your brand new notebook.
If there is any update to this problem please share it. -
I was all set to buy a dv2000 but after reading this thread, I am now hesitant. I tested my buddy's rommate's dv2000 touchpad and, yes, the lower part of the touchpad does seem to exhibit the problems described here. I hope this is an issue that can be fixed through software or driver updates.

I just received my dv2000t a couple days ago and I have the same problem. It's more of a slight annoyance than an inconvenience. I adjusted the edge motion border at the bottom to a thin sliver which helped a little, but the dead spot is still there. I'm seconds away from pulling out a sharpie and making that imaginary dead spot become visible. For anyone thinking of buying this laptop it's a small issue for everyday users however, if you play FPSs with mouse controlled axes the chances are that this is not for you (I can still play Half-Life I with gma950 despite the deadspot). Apart from the bloatware and lower 1/3 of dead mousepad there are no symptoms of substandard workmanship.

Yeah, I've got the same problem. Unfortunately its quite common.

Hi All,
I just found this website and it answered my question that I have been asking HP for weeks now. I got online with there chat session and tech support crew. I asked if there was a known problem with this touchpad on the DV2000t. They told me NO. Now I know this is not true. I also have the touchpad problem of no up and down response in the bottom 1/3rd of the touchpad. I also have the over sensitve 'jumpyness' issue as well. I tried to get in touch with Synaptics to find out more about this problem but they provide NO enduser support. This sucks. My old Gateway had a great touchpad. I mean I want to love this new computer but I'm already considering dumping it because of this issue. I find it hard to believe that this issue cannot be resolved by HP. By the way, the techs tried to tell my to load drivers again and all kinds of standard stuff. I already tried all that and even have the latest Synaptics 8.3.4 drivers and no better results. I'm going to write or chat with an HP tech again and tell them about this forum and that this issue is widespread. I hope they come up with a solution. They were trying to tell me to send it in for repair if reloading drivers and Windows did not help. I hate to think of sending this brand new unit in for repair just to have it come back the same, plus with scratches and what-not from being taken apart.
Vinnie
P.S. Maybe we should all go to the HP site and do a chat session with the techs and tell them this problem is widespread. -
Quick update... I sent this link to an online rep at HP. I showed them that this touchpad is an issue with many. I asked for information of how they are handling this issue. I explained that I don't want to send in this new machine to be dismantled and not really resolved. Plus, I'm not too fond of having a guy take this apart and possibly scratch this new machine. I used to work for Lucent Technologies and was not too fond of how some of my coworkers worked on customer's units. It wouldn't feel new anymore if any tech scratched my computer while working on it.
I'll let you know what they tell me when I get a response. I was told they will take action on this matter.
Vinnie -
Hmm, mine doesn't have this problem...
-
Hi Jon,
You mean you don't have any problem with only left and right response on your touchpad at the bottom? I'm curious to find out if this is a hardware issue like a loose touchpad cable inside the computer or a software issue. If you have the same Synaptics driver, then I'd think it was hardware. What operating system did you get with your system? I have Windows XP Home Edition. Please tell us more and maybe we can figure this out. Also, did you change any touchpad settings from the way they came from the factory?
Vinnie -
Interestingly enough I never noticed this problem before... well I notice a problem with my touch pad but couldn' pinpoint it. It is very jump to say the least. When I place my finger at the bottom of the touchpad and move my finger horizontally, the mouse moves as well. Vertically however, the mouse is dead for abought slightly less than a 1/3rd of lower touch pad.

Hey Mike,
Yep, that's the same problem some of us are having. I still have not received a reply from HP after my online chat session with one of there reps. I'm trying to figure out if it would be software or hardware. I would think that if it was hardware the whole bottom would be dead, not just the up and down motion. I mean I can even 'tap' and 'click' there and the response it ok. Just can't move up and down in the bottom 1/3rd. I'm sure HP has received laptops in for repair with this issue. I just want them to tell me what it is first before I send this one in. If it's a connector not seated, well then I'll fix that myself. But if it's faulty hardware, I have no choice. The frustrating thing about this is that I'm sure there are aware of this problem but won't come out and tell me what it is. If it's one of those things that is an engineering mishap and there's no way to fix it, then I don't want to send this laptop in for them to take it apart for no reason. I know things often come back with other problems after they are sent in for repair.
By the way, has anyone else here informed HP about this problem besides me?

I returned two dv2000t's last month because of unusable touchpads. The first one jumped all over the place and I couldn't tap/double tap at all. It would just make the cursor jump to a far corner of the screen.
The second one (replacement for the first) was a little better as far as tapping but it was still very hard to control, jumping around the screen and the bottom quarter of the touchpad was basically dead. I did try different symantics drivers on both and tried to fine tune all the touchpad adjustments but it made no difference.
I didn't want to try another dv2000 so I went with a dv9000. Even though it's the same design the touchpad is flawless.
I did make it clear that the reason I was returning both dv2000's was because of touchpad issues, so I'm sure they are aware of a problem.
I read on another thread (on this board) that HP said it was a hardware issue and there was going to be a bios update... -
Hey Jetcity,
Thanks for that great information. I didn't hear about the bios update rumor but if that's all it takes that's great. What you described is EXACTLY what I didn't want to run into. Any that's what I told the online rep. I didn't want to turn this unit over to them just to get it back in the same condition. I'm sorry you had to go through all that. I'll keep everyone informed if they do get back to me with any bios update information.
Vinnie -
Mine definitely has this problem, but I think with my touchpad, it's more serious in the top 1/3 than the bottom. I get to a certain point as I go up on the pad, and then, once I reach that invisible line, there's just no telling where the cursor's going to end up.
I love the computer aside from this small annoyance, but I would certainly like to resolve it. -
I've had my DV2040(DV2000) for more than a month now and I don't have this problem. I also asked a colleague awhile ago if he had any problems and he didn't seem to either.

I've been messing with this touchpad issue some more this weekend. HP support still has not gotten back to me with any answers. Anyway, I tried the standard Windows XP touchpad drivers. I had to totally delete all the Synaptics files from the computer to eliminate any conflicts with the new drivers. The pad is a little better but not like I think it should be. Still very shaky and jumpy. It does have some up and down response now in the bottom of the pad. I was now thinking that it was the drivers. I went to Office Depot and looked at an identical system. Well the box looked the same, but it's hard to find a system with exactly the same software setup as mine. I ordered mine customized. I was finding that some units have different Synaptics drivers. I wonder why? I mean they use the same touchpad. I tried different versions of the Synaptics drivers. All acted the same. I also tried bios versions F.05, F.09, and now I'm back to F.10. I'm back to thinking it's either hardware (faulty touchpad or loose ribbon cable) or a software conflict because of my custom setup. Most of the units I saw in BestBuy had the AMD chip but the one at Office Depot had the Intel. All the units at the stores had no up and down and only left and right response in the bottom of the touchpad. They did not exhibit any of the jumpy response though like mine. I even copied down the settings in the Synaptics menus and tried them at home. No luck. Maybe the guys that have problems and the guys that have good working touchpads can give the specs of your system. We may be able to figure out if this is a software or chip issue (more prone on Intel than AMD, or simply a faulty touchpad. My specs are:
Intel Core Duo 2.0GHz
1gig ram
Integrated video from Intel (Didn't order the NVIDIA)
DVD with LightScribe
WiFi, Bluetooth.
Bios Ver. F.10
Windows XP Home
Webcam built in
If I can't figure this out, I'm going to try and purchase a new touchpad. Thing is, I don't know if they'll let me buy one direct. I'm DESPERATELY trying not to have to send this in to HP. I don't trust them taking this apart. I've done computer repair in the past and can tell you I've seen some seriously poor competency from some of my coworkers. I'd rather buy my own new touchpad and install it or just put this thing up for sale.
Vinnie -
I've got the same touchpad issue with 2 out of 2 dv2000t laptops. I got the 1.83 Core Duo at the end of August and it's touchpad had the problem 1/3 of the way from the top. The problem drove me crazy and I called HP support. They had me do all the stuff that you guys talked about. In the end, they had me return the laptop and re-order a new one.
The new laptop was an 1.83 Core 2 Duo (upgrade!), but it's also suffering from the same touchpad problem. This touchpad problem is closer to the one that you guys are talking about because it's also got a dead area 1/3 from the bottom. Fortunately, I use the top half more than the bottom, but it's still annoying that my brand new laptop isn't working at full potential. -
I just returned my dv2000 because of exactly the same problem. See my thread here;
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=80081
Mine was on a dv2045ea (1.66Ghz core duo, 100gb HD, 1gb ram)
I spent a long time on the phone to HP engineers, did the drivers update, re-flashed the BIOS etc. but nothing fixed it. I'm convinced it's a hardware issue with that batch of touchpads. Both HP and the engineer at the computer store said they'd never heard of the problem before.
In fact, at the computer store a guy came in at the same time as me with a dv2000 under his arm to get replaced (but I think it was a s/w and not a h/w issue on his)....
Please Help on my dv2000t (strange problem)!!
