    Hi guys,

Bought an HP DV6500t about 8 months ago. Pretty maxed out from the factory. Have been running AVG and ad-aware since I first opened it up and I definitely do download a lot of "hot" stuff, if you know what I mean(music and movies only). About 6 weeks ago I went to turn my computer on and it started to power up, but the screen stayed blank. After about 5-6 seconds of the fan spinning and no other sounds, the computer shuts off. It then turns itself back on and still does not display nor are there any hardware sounds whatsoever. Checked the power cord and it's fine, also re-seated the ram per HP's suggestions. I sent it in and got it back about a month ago with a new motherboard installed and a reimaged hdd. Did all the same things I did the first time around. About 2 weeks after having gotten the computer back it does the same thing!!! HP now has my computer again, but I'm afraid of going through this again. I don't have the access to an external HD so needless to say, over 220gb of media was lost. Call it karma I guess, but I don't want to spend another 48 hours in front of my computer trying to get this stuff back. Please, if anyone on this board has any ideas at all. Help!!

Well, you might be eager to know about HP's three strike rule. If your product is sent in three times for repair unsuccessfully they will replace your notebook with a new one.

On a side note, have you tried connecting your computer to an external display?

Unfortunately, it's not a display problem. This 3 strike program sounds interesting though.

Yeah sorry. I'm tired and I completely skipped the line where you said it just turns off.

I'm not sure if you are familiar with the HP Case Management. However, they are the people that approve of your replacement and what not. They are like the satisfaction department of HP. When you call, treat them how you want to be treated. Don't come off as arrogant or completely p1ssed off otherwise they'll be less likely to end in your favor. Tell them this is your first time calling, a friend referred you and that you are dissatisfied with the service you received from the repair center.

I'm not exactly sure. My friend had this and the only way to get rid of it was to buy a new hard drive.

Got the computer back today. New motherboard, re-imaged hd and this time they put in a new heatsink fan. Everything's going well so far there's just one thing. I set the shadow restore to max 10gb and haven't installed anything but a round of vista updates, AVG and firefox. for some reason I only have 195gb out of 250gb available. WTF?

UPDATE: laptop now won't power on unless battery is removed and reset. Calling HP case management today and will discuss having the computer replaced.
