Can anyone suggest some help? I have a DV2608ca, with intermittent sound issues. One time I'll boot and the sound works fine. Another time I'll boot and the sound doesn't work (the hardware won't even show up in device manager). This happens on Windows 7 and it also happened when I had Vista installed.

I have done everything I can think of. Drivers are up to date. Its like the hardware is recognized sometimes and not others.

    Thanks.

What sound chip does it have? I'm too lazy to look it up.

Then grab the driver in my signature... That is, if you're running 64-bit.

I appreciate the help, but I suspect my problem is not driver related.

The issue is so intermittent. Sometimes it will boot fine and sound will work. Other times, it will boot and the sound device will not even show up in device manager.

Its been two days since the sound worked. Then, I boot up this morning, and the sound works again.

I'm strongly suspecting faulty hardware...or some hardware connection.

Yeah it could very well be the ribbon cables. Take it apart and find out. :p

I took it apart a couple weeks back to try and fix the issue, but honestly, I don't know what I'm looking for.

Wait a sec. If it doesn't even show up in Device Manager when it goes out, then cables have nothing to do with it. The chip is soldered to the motherboard.

That's what I thought. I think its something bad with the chip.

The battery is dead on this machine, could it be related to that or a dead cmos battery?

It will take less than 15 minutes to deinstall the device, deinstall the drivers, and then reinstall new drivers.

    reboot between each step
