i just got my dv8000t and would like to format it. The problem is, I don't want to do pc restore. All i want is a clean copy of windows media edition. I don't know where i can just burn that out alone. When i go into pc recovery disc creator, it asks me to burn out 23 cd-r! I don't want any of the junk that came with the computer, all i want is the media edition. Please help me do that.

Edit: i also want to mention i know about the recovery partition in my hard drive, i don't want to take that route either. As soon as i find a way to burn out media edition, i'm going to delete the partition to free some space.

If your notebook is under warranty and you get on HP's online chat they should send you a media center cd at no cost. I would use online chat to ask for it( they are more flexiable then the phone support at times.)

Yeah you probably will need to pay. Try calling. If that doesn't work paying the $10 will be worth it.

Ok after about an hour of debating, they are finally going to send the cd. Here is a small warning to all future buyers of HP. Yes HP want to save money by not including the cds in the laptop, however they allow you to burn it out with the PC recovery disc creator in the computer. The problem with that route (for me at least) is that it takes 21 cd-r! or 2 dvds. I don't think any of us want to waste that many cds, and plus those cds will be useless because i want to format, not do a pc restore that will install all the junk software back into the computer again. Basically once you have an writable optical drive in your computer, you screwed yourself over. Because they will not send you cds, they want you to burn it. It is HP policy- otherwise you have to pay. Personally, i say that policy is stupid because it doesn't factor in the people who just want to do a clean reinstall. This also means they have sets of cds ready to be sent out to users who don't have a cd burner, this also means those users have the luxury of doing a clean reinstall if they wanted to, and this also means they are punishing us (the people who actually paid more for cd burner) by not giving us that option. After talking to several people, and finally annoy the hell out of them until they talked to the supervisor, they are going to send it. Just wanted to share my personal experience and my 2 cent to those who are going to get an HP.

PS. After the first day of using this computer and typing this response, i believe i also have the screwed up keyboard issue as mentioned on this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=57325
So yea, i probably will not get an HP in the future. Even though dell also doesn't include the cds when the laptop arrive, they at least have the option for you to burn out windows OS system alone and not waste 21 cds to do a pc restore like HP.

I got my XP Pro cd for free. I had no problems. I just ask for one and the lady talked to her supervisor and she said yes.
