Does anyone know if the 15.4" Wide LCDs on R3000 series are as good as the wonderful x1000 displays? (WXGA model) I am really tempted to order the R3000T for $799 shipped! I understand that HP is the first company to promote sub-$1000 wide notebooks aggressively, but did they have to use an inferior supplier to reach that price point?

Dell used to use Sharp panels for UXGA, I think on the Inspiron 8100 UXGA, but since 8200, they went for a lower spec model (in contrast, color accuracy & brightness). Of course, one wouldn't expect Toshiba polysilicon at HP's mainstream prices, but it would be a shame if they were tempted to buy panels from some cheap Taiwanese supplier.

To be fair, I can't say all Taiwanese makers produce crap, but they are generally willing to cut (non-speccable) corners to meet "customers'" needs. Reliablility and quality, unlike price, can't be easily compared online. I'm hoping to get an LG-Philips or Samsung panel, with more accurate colors, in my HP notebook. Those enterprises also seem more oriented towards technical excellence rather than business manuvers, in my opinion.

If anyone has opened up a notebook, if you're a technician, or if you had experience with an intolerable display in the HP lineup, please let all of us know what is the panel inside. Thank you very much.

I would be REALLY REALLY surprised if HP notebooks used samsung or LG displays. REALLY REALLY surprised especially into the R3000T model. I went to bestbuy and checked out all the notebooks side by side and thought that the X1000 screeb looked far superior to the R3000T screen (in clarity, contrast ratio, and brightness).

OT: if you want to look at wonderful screens (dunno about your budget but just to expand your knowledge I would) go check the fujitsu N5010 and sony xbrite screens. They are truly wonderful.

Acutally, the NX7000 that I had, which is a similar model to the X1000, used a Samsung LCD. I actually opened up the LCD and swapped it with another unit that also had a Samsung LCD. Since the NX7000 uses these LCDs, I'm pretty sure the X1000 will utilize them as well.
