OK so I'm in the library attempting to begin the work day and finish my paperwork. When I go to use my Compaq v6000z it loads to the user accounts page and goes no further. It won't respond to input from the mouse or the touchpad. When I tried to shut it down with the power button it went into hibernation. When it resumed windows I used f8 and chose to restore data instead of restarting. Then the user accounts page loaded and nothing else happens. Can someone please tell me how to fix this. BTW: I fell asleep working on the laptop last night and closed when I woke up briefly but this has never happened before.

    Please help!!!!

You might want to try defragging your hard drive. I was starting to get this problem and once I did a defrag it hasn't happened since

Startup in safe mode F5 and create another user account from there. Reboot and try the new user account

    Thank you for your response.

I don't know what happened. I tried F10 and ran a diagnostic on the Hard Drive then it unfroze. I will defrag tonight. And I will remember F5 should the situation occur again.

Interestingly, the Hard Drive passed the quick test but failed the comprehensive test as #2 error. Hopefully defragging will eliminate this problem.

did you press the volume or any quick play key before the lockup? Mine used to lockup when I press mute or volume, I ugraded the drivers and it helped to some degree.

You shouldn't get any HD test errors. Back up any critical data NOW, then ask HP what to do. Anything stressful like a defrag might finish off a dying drive... which is OK since it makes it easier to get a replacement.

Try to scan the hard disk using the HD manufacturer's diagnostic utility
