    -Who is newer?

Those are bad notebooks to buy, both have known faulty GPUs.
Just search "nvidia G86 and G84 faulty" in google.

Intel DV6000 and DV9000's, no matter the version, are all based on the same motherboard (GBM or HBM Southbridge).

AMD DV6000 and DV9000's, no matter the version, are all based on the same motherboard(s) (NB/SB Version and Unibridge MCP Version).

They are pretty much regarded as junk across the board. Various manufacturing and engineering faults made them a pretty bad black mark on HP's reputation.

    Avoid them. Don't bother.

To answer your question...The DV9000 would be older, with older technology. A DV9700 would be the 17" equivalant of the DV6700.

The DV9000 series had a 7000 series NVidia video, and the DV 6700 had the 8400 Nvidia video. Both of these video processors had heating issues that caused them to fail, usualy within a year, or right after the warrenty ended.

As others have said, neither could be considered reliable.

I've been using my dv9500 since Nov 2007 almost everyday. I have a Zalman notebook cooler that I got from Newegg and the temps have dropped dramatically which is what fries these things out. Before that I jacked the back of the laptop up with some rubber pieces to keep the bottom of the laptop up off the desk so it can breathe more. I've watched a lot of movies on this thing and it's still running strong.
Right now I'm noticing a 50°F lower temp on the CPU cores and the battery and 25°F lower on the GPU and hard drives. Huge difference!
The 17" weighs a little more, but the screen size/resolution is better.
As these are fairly old now I wouldn't pay more than $500 for the dv9000 (which was about $1200 brand new) and $400 for the dv6000 (about $800 new). Just depends on what you're gonna use it for, hauling around to class I'd get the 15" and a sleeve. If it's gonna sit at home get the 17".
    Good luck.

My DV9700 refuses to die as well. Besides high temperature, another thing that kills them is sudden transitions from hot to cold ie powering it up in a cold place. I've been careful about that and mine keeps on chugging.

It is quite heavy if you need to carry it around a lot. But for a home entertainment or work at the office laptop it's wonderful.
