I have a HP zt3000 witch was offered to me along with a "doesnt work" statement. As i cant aford a laptop and im not easily scared by hardware i decided to download the corresponding technical manual and try to locate hte problem. After several atempts I still havent determined what the problem is.

-Computer powers on but after some brief seconds (aprox 5sec) theres no graphical output and fan stops.Laptop aparently keeps on but theres no activity I have to press power button for a while until it turns off.

To keep things easier I'll post my attempts, these are the things I have tried so far:

    Tried to use external monitor
Tried to remove extra RAM (add-on) and nothing
    Removed battery and CDROM
    Removed hard drive
Swapped internal RAM with external (living the internal one out)
    Removed WI-FI and Bluetooth

Since I dont have an extra graphics card this was the only thing besides motherboard I can think of being broke.

I even removed graphics card (ATI Mobility 9200) and tried to boot just to see what happened and the result was the same:

Leds would go on and fan would stop after 5sec and then:nothing.

BTW:Caps Lock and Num Lock dont work or at least leds don't come on.

Im not very familiar with laptop motherboards.I know I can diagnose desktop ones by BEEP codes. Is there anything similar for laptops?

    Any help appreciated.

    Ty in advance.

Yes, you can diagnose the MB by the beeps but apparently yours is working (you didn't mention any beeps, right?) Usually, when the MB is dead you will hear 3 or 4 beeps and the computer will turn off.
Further, are you sure that this computer has a detachable video card? Actually, I'm 99% sure it hasn't...
Sometimes, after an unsuccessful BIOS upgrade, laptops do exactly what you describe.
I have never heard of a dead CPU but I wonder how the computer would react if for some reason the CPU is bad. Could it be the monitor connection? Do you get any HDD access, I mean does it try to read from the HDD (you said the leds are on). Do you have a floppy drive to try to boot from it?
