After updating my dv6500t to Vista SP1 I started to hear a low electronic 'pop' sound from the speakers when clicking on web pages or opening windows. The strange thing is that it only happens when running on the battery. Is there any way to fix this? Has it happened to anybody else?

try updating the drivers, and look through your sound settings, maybe you have it set with something wrong or something, good luck :)

did you download SP1 from Windows update or use the standalone installer?

I got SP1 running good on my dv6500t. Only problem I had was with a older version of kaspersky AV. I updated that and its all good now. So yeah, look into your drivers. The other thing messes up sp1 is certain AV's programs and firewalls. Mostly security apps that can screw things up or device drivers.

shouldn't have done it, I read that they don't show up on WU because there is something in your system that is not yet compatiable for SP1, thats why only some people have WU show up on their systems.

I installed SP1 via Windows Update. After the popping sound started I attempted to update the Realtek sound driver but it didn't go well so I used system restore to undo it. My current Realtek driver is 6.0.1.5384. I tried to update to 6.0.1.5494 with SP37743. I followed the preferred 'install now' instructions. The first thing it did was uninstall my current driver. Then a system reboot. When the system restarted a new driver was installed. I checked the driver in Device Manager and it had a 2006 date and a lower number than the driver it replaced. I quickly did a system restore and I'm back to where I started. What's the story with the HP sound driver update SP37743? Why didn't it install 6.0.1.5494 like it was supposed to?

I don't know but I am running 6.0.1.5384 on my dv6500t without any problems with SP1. I'm thinking it may be another application/driver causing your popping noises. The only think I can think of is check your power plan settings. On battery power I have to use balanced or my sound can be choppy with streaming on winamp.

I tried a number of different power plan settings including Balanced. They didn't make a difference. The popping is an annoyance, but I'm not going to uninstall SP1 because of it, especially since it only happens on battery power. Before I installed SP1 I upgraded the BIOS to F.45. That was the one thing about the process that made me nervous. No undoing that if it fails. I also updated my video, fingerprint, and wireless drivers. No problem with those.

HP says it is advisable to update to the latest BIOS before installing SP1, so I’m going to stick with F.45. Hopefully the problem lies elsewhere.

This is what I posted a couple of days ago on the same topis. It's not just SP1.....
I had owned an HP dv9260nr laptop since July 2007. I had a lot of issues but the straw that broke the Camels back started happening Nov 2007. Everytime something electrical was going on in the computer, I would get a crackling (electrical static type sound) come through the speakers. It was so bad, the only way I could use the laptop was to turn the speakers down all the way. I did everything I could, drivers, re-installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Finally I sent it to HP. They were able to reproduce the problem and replaced the main board and main HDD. It worked fine for about a week and then it started again.

I was able to get HP to replace it with a dv9700t (Vista Home Premium 32 bit)which I received on Friday, 3/28/08. I spent the weekend putting all the software back in and about got sick to my stomach when this one started doing the same thing, although no where near as bad. It seems to be more prevelant on battery. I tried a second HP battery I have but no change. With the battery out and on AC only it doesn't seem to be there athough that hadn't made a difference on my original 9260. I have done the battery out, hold down power key thing but to no avail.

Has anyone else experienced this issue?
    Thanks, Don

To the OP question, are you sure it's an electrical sound? If may be a Windows sound. Go into Control Panel then Sound. Click on the Sound tab. Check to see if anything is set for Start Navigation in the Windows Explorer section. For some reason, this always gets set back to a clicking sound on my system whenever I upgrade.

    Just a thought.

I'm not an electrical engineer, but it sounds like a grounding problem of some sort. The power cord may act as a ground. What to do fom there....I have no clue.

I doubt it’s a grounding problem because the dv6500t worked perfectly for months. No popping sounds or anything. As soon as I installed SP1 the popping sound started. It’s definitely an electrical sound, not a windows sound.

I get a popping sound from my speakers when on battery too. I don't know if mine was caused by Vista SP1 because I barely used my laptop on battery before I installed SP1 via Windows Update. It's not a big problem for me. I just put my speakers on mute, but I hope you figure out what is causing it and get it fixed. Good luck to you.

I had it so bad on my old dv9260, HP replaced the computer. My replacement dv9700t has it only on batteries also. I was working on battery and reprogramming my Pronto TSU7000 via the USB cable. Each time I unplugged the remote from the USB, I would get that same pop from the speaker, not to be confused with the chime when a USB devise is undocked. Otherwise I get it only periodically in normal use with no consistant rime or reason. My dv9260nr had Vista ultimate 64 on it with no SP1 installed. Replacement 9700 has Vista Home Premium 32 with SP1 from factory installed.

I thought that I was going crazy, but yes I am hearing the same popping noise when browsing after SP1. Updating Realtek driver does nothing!
Has this been resolved for anyone?

I still get the popping sound and I installed the latest HP Realtek audio driver (6.0.1.5548 A) which is supposed to provide support for SP1. I also have the latest BIOS (F.53).

Well I have SP1 with all the newest drivers and no issues with my dv6500t. I'm thinking this may be a defect on some of the MOBO's. Popping sounds has never been an issue on my system. But this does seem to effect a number of systems. I don't think drivers is the source of this problem. If it were, this forum would be flooded with complaints. My only advice is to contact HP and send in for a MOBO replacement which is probably the only thing that will fix it. I also recall a poster doing a clean install to fix this and no go. This is most probably a hardware issue.

Anyone ever find a fix to this? I just got a DV5-1015nr and have the same exact problem. It's a popping sound from the speakers at random times. Sounds like some grounding issue or something. Very annoying to say the least.

This might sound weird, but its probably your wifi card causing this.

Try disabling your wifi card in the device manager then restart the notebook

Actually I already looked into this. The wireless being on/off has no effect on it. The popping never happens when running on AC, only when on battery. It's pretty random when it happens but I'd say on average I hear the pop around 3-4 times every five minutes.

I dunno. A search on google turns up other people with the DV series notebooks having the same issue but no one has posted any fix. HP wants me to send it in which I don't want to do since it's 2 days old and I need it for work. I guess I'm going to end up taking it back to the store and exchanging it which will cost me hours of time reloading apps, etc.. Agghhh!

I don't think there is a fix. I'm convinced its a hardware issue.. maybe something not grounded on MOBO etc.. But those that have had the issue have tried reloading the OS, and newer drivers etc... which does not help. I have a dv6500 and have never had any issues.. I have used three different audio drivers and they all work. I would take it back. Personally, if I have any issues within the first 30 days I will not give the manufacture the satisfaction of repairing it and possibly making it worse or scratching it up. You definitely want to return it for something else at this point.

Yeah I'm going to return it. No way I'm sending a brand new notebook in for repair. I'll probably exchange it for one of the new FW series Sony's. I'm affraid to get another one of the same model.
What kind of battery life are you getting on your HP?? I was expecting more than 2 hours with light use (wireless on).

I probably only get around 2 hours on my hi capacity 6 cell. But that's with Wifi and around 75 percent brightness. I also have the blue tooth on with BT mouse. I think BT takes a bunch of power I have heard. I strongly suggest getting the 12 cell if you get an HP. There not all that great on power IMO. But other then that my dv6500t has been great. Brilliant screen, nice speakers and so far very reliable. Oh, I also have the 8400 nvidia which will eat more power as well. I'd still buy an HP over a dell any day. As for Sony, I only like the extremely expensive 11" ultra portables TZ with led screens and carbon fiber cases. Those are still made in Japan I believe. The rest of the sony line is overpriced for what you get IMO.

I just purchased a dv6700. I get the same popping noise from the speakers when running on battery only. I have determined what the cause is! First of all, it only happens once a sound is played after more than 30 seconds of no sound coming from the speakers.

The reason it only happens on battery is because the screen dims. It only happens on a dimmed screen. Modify your power settings for full brightness and you won't hear anymore popping sounds. I have no idea why this is the case, but it is frusterating. I have taken even the High Performance setting and dimmed the screen ever so slightly, and it makes the popping sound. But with full brightness on battery there is no popping sound.

    Hope this helps.

Isn't this the issue thats fixed by disabling the two "power management" settings in the IDT audio tray settings (preferences or settings I believe)...?
