I will put Software Framework and Support Assistant up once I make them.

HP Quick Launch Buttons I'll keep on each individual thread for now because it installs a driver. It seems that the newer models use a new version that is no longer officially compatible with the ones even from late last year. I've been reluctant to update to this new version in the driver threads due to the changes.

You may want to add dm3-3xxx (even though it's only CTO right now, no retails model yet) to the list :p

Added, thanks! :) Although I'm usually up to snuff when keeping track of the notebook models, I sometimes will overlook new models and need to be made aware of them.

Off-topic: Are you a member of the Neowin forums? I occasionally breeze through there and I think I saw one of your posts. (However, I'm not a member over there) :D

Kewl, I'm sure this will be a long thread... wanted to get my name at the top! :p

Justin, I'm sure you intend to do this anyway.. but a running tally at the bottom of your post showing the most current updates is very helpful in staying current....

    thanks

Strange, I just tried to install wireless assistant 4 and got an error stating " This computer does not support HP wireless assistant 4" (sp48832.exe)

It doesn't matter if my wireless is activated or not, I still get the error.

    Hey justinkw1,

First off, thanks for all of your work on compiling current drivers and software!

I was wondering if you could post a download link for HP Recovery Manager.

I'm hoping to do a clean format of my Envy 14 soon but would like to keep the RECOVERY and HP_TOOLS partitions in tact in an effort to maintain their functionality until I actually need the space at which time I will delete them.

thank you for your work. But the UEFI could not be used on my laptop. Mine is dv3-2123tx. However, there're still some applications from HP that here not list like HP power manager, HP advisor, ect.

I'm currently having trouble pinpointing which notebooks and netbooks have UEFI and which ones don't. Thanks for mentioning this and I'll make sure to remove the dv3 from the supported models.

As you noted, not all of the HP applications are listed on the first post. I'm just trying to list the ones that I think are popular for users who are interested. HP Advisor is definitely one, and I'll eventually add it to the first post. :)

Great work with this thread. +rep.

The Santa Rosa series of business notebooks (2210s, 2510p, 2710p, 6510b, 6710b, 6910p, 8510p/w, 8710p/w) do not have UEFI. It was the series after, the Elitebooks, that incorporate a HP modified Insyde BIOS with UEFI support.

I know HP BIOS Update (UEFI) isn't extremely useful based on what I've seen...feel free to point out otherwise. :)

I doubt it will be possible for anyone (even the great Justin) to post a legal link to a recovery image of original HP factory load for any of our laptops. You can, however, order a set of the recovery disks from HP for a nominal fee. These can be used to recover the original factory OS/load (including the recovery manager) for your notebook, assuming you get the correct set for your particular model.

This is why it is a very good idea to make burning a set of one's own recovery disks one of the first things one does after one gets a new notebook. Then one can remove the recovery partition if desired and still use the disks to recover the original factory load if ever necessary, such as when selling the notebook or returning it to the factory for service.

However, in any case, the best thing is to also be making one's own complete backups of one's entire system/configuration on a regular basis, so one can also recover all one's data, installed programs, settings, customizations, etc. without having to start from the factory load, which obviously would be very time consuming because after that one would still have to recover one's data and reinstall all one's programs, settings, etc.

So if all you need is the ability to restore your own system and configuration, you should be considering getting some decent backup software or cloning software (my preference is for backup software such as Acronis True Image Home or Paragon or Macrium Reflect, which all also can do cloning if/when desired as well as making compressed backup images of your entire setup).

It's simply much easier and faster to restore from a recent backup of your particular setup than to have to go back and start over again from the original factory load which will not include any of your personal data or installed programs and settings etc. So one should be making such backups on a regular basis. Most of the programs mentioned can be set up to do that automatically on a schedule without requiring any further user intervention once the schedule is set up and activated.

I don't see why someone couldn't make an .iso of it to download....
legality shouldn't be an issue if they ship it for free anyway.

They don't usually ship it for free unless you bought the notebook new in the past 30 or 60 days or so and tell them a story about why you couldn't burn your own in the usual manner.

Legality isn't an issue to me, but it might be to HP.

Personally I have no need for an entire recovery image of the HP factory state for my laptop. I purchased recovery discs from HP and burnt my own prior to doing a clean install of Windows just to be safe.

I am simply hoping to get the actual HP Recovery Manager utility so that I can mess around with the capabilities of the RECOVERY partition of my hard drive after the clean install. I left the partition in tact knowing that I could delete it later in the hope that if I could install Recovery Manager it might still maintain all of its functionality. As I can't seem to locate the Recovery Manager installer in my original SwSetup folder I'm hoping justinkw1 can track something down. I wouldn't mind having a way to quickly and easily restore everything back to factory status until I actually need to use the space which RECOVERY takes up.

Curious what exactly HP BIOS Update (UEFI) does? If you get your BIOS from the driver page, what do you need this one for?

That's what I'm currently wondering as well. I think the HP BIOS Update (UEFI) acts more like a BIOS flash / recovery tool that does not operate in Windows (although it must be installed when in Windows).

Thanks for the reply, what you say makes good sense. I just want to make clear though, I'm not asking for the recovery disks themselves. Rather I am looking for the program that creates the recovery disks, since it is not on my machine.

I'm going to hold off on HP Update since I don't find it a reliable tool at all. Sometimes it offers updates that are older than what is already installed on the notebook.

At least one user has asked about HP Recovery Manager and I would like to report what I've found so far. I've been looking at the HP support website and there are a couple of releases that look interesting, but I'm worried about compatibility. Here is one promising release from HP and I would like feedback from users who use it.

HP Recovery Manager for Windows 7
    Version: 1.00 A (5.5.2104)
    Notes: CVA, HTML
    Download: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45001-45500/sp45415.exe

Note that this most likely only works on notebooks pre-installed with Windows 7. The recovery partition must still be intact if you are performing a factory restore. If requested, I'll have to find a version that works on Windows Vista. :)

Well, I tried using this install of Recovery Manager on my clean installed version of Windows 7 hoping that it would re-enable the original functionality of my RECOVERY partition which I had left intact, but after extracting the files into SwSetup the installer itself doesn't seem to do anything. I've tried it a few times with no luck.

Would I be correct to assume that this indicates that if one does a fresh install of Windows the RECOVERY partition is rendered unusuable?

Since the clean install, my RECOVERY partition has consisted of a partition with 13.6 GB of used space which, when opened, seems to have only an empty folder named "Recovery," so I am thinking this must be the case, but if anyone else knows or expects differently I would certainly be interested.

Again, I was trying to install Recovery Manager onto a clean version of Windows 7 to restore the functionality of the intact RECOVERY partition. I cannot say whether this install will or will not work on a pre-installed version of Windows 7 as indicated by justinkw1.

    Thanks yet again!

This may be a stupid question but has "anybody" actually reaped any benefit from HP support assistant?

Seems every time I've attempted to get any of their wizards or help topics to help they "never" pertain to the problem at hand nor do they offer insight or solutions?

Quite frankly, I now avoid HP help as they are more harm than good.. I don't even trust them as they always steer me in a generic blindsided fix all solution that involves a total hysterectomy rather than excising the harmful agent or problem.
I would not let some kid off the street on my computer to tweak anything.. nor will I let HP.

I'm trying to to sound critical of anyone who uses this too but I'm genuinely asking has anybody ever gained benefit from its use and do you trust HP to allow their wizards to mess with your system?

I agree with you. I've never found the tool useful to date but keep updating it in the (probably vain) hope that someday it might prove helpful. So far the things it's suggested have been wrong or older than the version I've already got installed. It looks cool though. :)

Ah ok, just wanted to make sure I'm not missing something good......

asking HP for help is like being lost as you drive at night and you have to tell them... "no I'm not giving you the wheel, just tell me where to go and I will decide if I want to go there!".

They will tell you to drive off a cliff because the map they use doesn't see the canyon!

What exactly is the Essential System Updates package for? I've just completed a clean install of Win 7 so I'm a little extra careful with what software I'm installing. Just want to know if it's something that's actually needed for performance. I have a dv6t-se.

    Thanks!

Its ok to install... I too did a clean install.... Its probrably not needed but on the other hand its not bloatware either.

Whatever "enhancements mean"..... seem ok though.

It hotfixes any windows related problems with some oem hardware, which we later see push out in upcoming service pack.

Oh you see something noticeable difference in dv6tse like I did.
The most obvious one, it fixed was the fingerprint reader wake up.
