There is a possible fix for the HD 4000 and WiDi issue with the 3D version.
(This fix will work on other models of notebooks and with HD 3000)

It seems that the Intel HD 4000 is designed for Windows 8, and I know how HP and MS are pushing for you to spend the extra $15.00 for the upgrade.
The Envy 17-32xx 3D series qualifies for this upgrade(?).
This is the DL page for the Intel HD 4000 driver:
Support for the 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ Processors with Intel® HD Graphics 4000/2500
This could be the possible fix for the issue, Windows 8.
    Although,,,,,
I like W7, and to me, W8 will be the Vista to W7.
    I DON'T WANT WINDOWS 8!
As I have posted earlier, its a DRIVER ISSUE, somebody didn't pay someone as all the hardware is there.
    OR,,,
Its a case of big corporations tying your hands behind your back and sticking their hands in your pocket.
    IMO.

    Here's the kicker:

    English Manual
"In an attempt to make money, Microsoft prohibited loading of non-signed drivers in Windows Vista and 7. Since certificate’s cost is big (and a new one is needed for any new version of driver) manufacturers chose not to update drivers, if no fatal flaws are present. It wouldn’t be so bad if not for video drivers – new versions of which are released regularly, and they often contain performance improvements and bug fixes. Consumers with Switchable Graphics notebooks were left without updates for more than 8-9 months!
    Time to change this.
Leshcat created his own driver sets, based on latest Intel & AMD drivers.
The only problem was driver signing,
but it was effectively dealt with."

    Who is Leshcat?

    Look here and READ CAREFULLY!

Catalyst 12.6 UnifL UP2/3 for Hybrid Graphics

    UnifL supports ONLY :
AMD Descrete HD Card with Intel HD iCPU Graphics ,
And was only tested on Windows 7 x64

This is also a working fix for anyone installing Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Build 8250) in their Envy, this is how I came about finding leshcat's site.
Windows 8 Consumer Preview: AMD Switchable Graphics - Unswit... - HP Support Forum

HP / AMD / Intel, One, Two or all 3 didn't want to spend the money and get everything WHQL recertified for W8 and pay Microsoft the big $$$ a 2nd, or even a 3rd time.
By the time W8 is out and HP has issued a (possible) patch/fix, the new generation of games will be out and a whole new set of drives needed again, rendering the (possible) update useless, unless you want to play older games.
Intentional or not, somehow, someone or something broke a link in the chain.
MS has been on the hot seat for anticompetition and price fixing in the past.
    IMO

For those of you that can't return your your 3D versions, or don't want to for one reason or another, this could fix the poor battery life you are getting, and even get the WiDi working.

    Who's the 1st to try?

    Post back with the results.

Au4u, it says it was only tested on 7 running x64, then says it's a working fix for win 8 consumer preview. Works for both I'm assuming?

This fix was only tested on W7 x64 ONLY!
This is a working fix for the W8 Consumer Preview.

Intel HD 4000 is a new W8 Program and Driver.
HP jumped the gun and stuck it in W7, thinking we will all BUY into it.
    I don't.

This I can defiantly tell you.
    When I receive my 17 3D replacement I will:
    1. Plug it in and turn it on.
    2. Do my recovery disks.
    3. Update everything.
    4. Install Firefox, migrate my bookmarks and Add-ons.
    5. Start a user account.
    6. Duplicate FF.
    7. Proceed with a test for the switchable graphics with: Alan Wake 1, Portal 2, BF3, MW3.
    8. Proceed with the Leshcat fix.
    9. Test: Alan Wake 1, Portal 2, BF3, MW3.
If anything fails, it goes back within the 30 day return period (Canada) and a non 3D unit will be shipped to me.
#@%! HP, same thing that had to be done with the 7690M XT chip and driver, 3rd party patch/fix bondo again, I'm on my own again, but I have good support.

Yeah, I have the 3D version.

I didn't post in his forum because there weren't any errors when I installed it, it's just that graphics switching still didn't work afterwards

I can't even install the HD 4000 driver. Each time I run the installer, it says that my computer doesn't meet the requirements probably because the HD 4000 isn't listed under Display Adapters

Could you try and run the Intel® Processor Identification Utility download for Windows*
Did you do the Intel Driver Update Utility?
DIRECT LINK: Intel® Driver Update Utility
Did you just DL the update from Intel and try to install it?

Do ANY of the Intel tools identify the HD 4000 as being there?
    Utility Tools

I guess what I'm asking is, does the HD 4000 work in this i7 chip?
Is it in the i7? Or did HP ask for it not to be activated and get a discount on the chip.
    Is this Intel's issue?

I have a question, is the option there but not turned on?
Is unlocking the bios the answer?

Yes, I read his thread, Anon, should do a DOS on HP.
I wonder if Googleing his a posting names will bring any results up.

    Any updates as to when?

'patrica.K.' - In response to your question. The reason why I tried an alternative route is because HP is taking too long. I currently have a BBB.org claim filed against HP, and that is where I am getting my information from.

'ruvy01' F.Y.I HP Concierge Tech Support is not in the loop on this, unless you talk to their supervisor's supervisor.

    I will post update soon...

OK, so what your telling us is the BBB has better knowledge and insight to this issue than HP Concierge Tech Support.

Post you communiques with the BBB, I'm interested in reading them and finding out what they have to say.
I'm sure were all interested in that.
Unless, all you do is talk to them on the phone, in that case, I can understand that you wont have anything to back your statement.

Are there any downsides to trying these different ways? I would not like to brick my computer or mess anything up, I have created recovery disks but I have 50GB of music on the computer that I don't really have the luxury of having a backup just in case.

You need to create a USB OEM bios flash BEFORE attempting anything like this process, in case you semi-brick your notebook.
Very few PC's ever get fully bricked, that cant be recovered.
Read the Bios-Mods forum info and links, they have a huge amount of info there.

Report back if you have any luck.

My laptop came almost perfect (just the touchpad doesn't work in the bottom two corners but that isn't a big deal). I watch shows that are streamed and get 3 to 3.5 hours of battery life on power saver with wifi on. It isn't that bad but would like to see if it can be improved with the whole graphic switching so I don't burn out the laptop.

I am currently awaiting physical documentation, once received I will scan it and post. The Better Business Bureau has found HP practices in this instance to be illegal at the current time and is involving other agencies to take the appropriate measures, the agencies the BBB is referring to were not disclosed to me as of this time.

I did receive a call from the HP Executive Office out of Palo Alto, CA
today (800-756-0608 option# 7). The HP Executive that I spoke to on the I don't think knows what a processor is let alone switchable graphics. Long story short he referred me back to my case manager in the HP Retention Department (877-917-4380 ex. 93). However, my case manager is not a developer nor a software engineer.

If everyone wants a fix please contact these provided telephone numbers and express your concern. Example - It took just as few as 100 people contacting the Feds to express their concern over an accelerator pedal issue on Fords and Mazda car models, now something is being done.

Until then, please get these numbers all over facebook, the web, friends, and others with an affected HP Envy.

I will post more info soon...
    Thanks To All

I would never buy an Audi A8 so no worries there, and no that statement is quite different. It would be more along the lines of there are some door dings in the car but everything else runs fine. Blanket statements make people look ridiculous, so let's refrain from them and find a fix instead, right?

    It's hidden on CNET's website
    - That is why I posted it to this forum
    - If everyone fills it out then it will post and be visible again
    - The reason no reviews have been made is because people have to manually type and search for exact laptop and people are lazy
    - Trust me, its not removed - I retract my statement :
Note: NEWS "CNET is currently working on a video review of the HP Envy 17 3D 3200 and non 3D 3200 model. Finally...

I follow bios-mod pretty closely I don't see any Envy 17 32xx requests for bios mods, do you have a link to the thread for that bios. It would be extremely risky to flash any bios not specifically designed for the exact intended laptop. Even bios with the same revision number (like f.06) for a different laptop will not work. HP bios are now also RSA signed which is giving the modders trouble resulting in many semi bricks so I'd be extremely careful flashing a modded bios at this time.

I'd love the AHCI to be unlocked myself so that is why I'm interested in the unlocked bios.

    Once again, read the following:
As for AHCI, the board is already running in AHCI mode, you don't need to worry.

Oh I read the warning, its still questionable where that link is from, as there are no corresponding threads for the Envy 17 32xx on Biod-Mods and you can't just take a bios from some random laptop that is running F.06 and expect it to work cross models. On top of this its ultra risky to even flash one of these mod bios now because HP has RSA signed bios and there have been a high amount of soft bricked laptops trying to flash a mod bios.

As for AHCI I owned the 3D model about a month ago, and I am fairly sure it was not running in AHCI mode but I wont be sure about that until I receive my replacement laptop on monday.
