Hi all,
Like many others, I just ordered an Envy 14 with a single 4GB ram dimm and I just noticed this excellent deal for a 4GB stick for $15 AR. Any guidance as to whether this would be compatible/ideal for use in tandem with HP's stock ram?

It should make sure you check the 4 GB you got in first to see how many RAM modules on each side. A 4-Module DDR 3 can't mingle with a 8-Module DDR 3 well, but matching modules per side for sure will work. Often the stock RAM is a 8-Module. Also, make sure you get one with matching clocks. I know that people will say a 1066 with work together with a 1333 but to be really safe, I suggest you match the clock speed with the one in the stock. i5's come with 1066, i7's come with 1333.

Both i5 and i7 envies come with the 1333 MHz ram, but only the i7 can run the ram at 1333MHz. The i5 limits the ram speed to 1066.

Weird. MY old E15 i5 came with 1066. I thought they only gave 1333 to the good machines in the corporate line. -
weird its not $15 anymore either.

Lots of us did go with 4gb on one stick myself included. If anyone finds a good deal on another 4gb stick let us know.

Do two DIMMs drain battery power significantly faster than one?
-
no, only a difference of 1-2 minutes. I got the 1 DIMM also but I'm thinking I should've got the 1 DIMM because I want dual channel so I would have to get 2 new 4GB cards anyways..how much do you think I could sell the 1 DIMM for? At least $50?
-
huh? why would you sell it? If you got the 1dimm 4gb you would just buy another 4gb stick (like $45) and have dual channel 8gb
-
If you got 6gb you have to sell the 2gb stick and buy a 4gb stick for dual channel. If your talking about selling the 2gb stick its worth about $15-20 on ebay.
-
It's usually a good idea to pair exactly the same kind of RAM sticks together, otherwise it can lead to problems when they're running in dual channel.
-
I was going to search the forum but this thread is exactly what I was looking for. Do I just need 204 pin 1333 sticks. What would be good manufacturer to buy. I would like to upgrade to 8GB and have the same sticks because I am very particular about my computers.
BTW, I have the i7 beats edition.
Thanks -
like halkyon says, its usually better to match the brands and everything to make sure the dual channel is working as it should. Anyone know how much of a difference this would make in real world use? Or does anyone know the exact specs of the stock HP RAM so I can find something the same
-
well I will buy your memory for $30 then you can buy two matching stick for $80
-
I figure we both end up spending $50 on 8gb of memory so its even deal and all the people who paid 150 for 8gb seem like dum dum.
I paid $20 to upgrade to my 4gb stick. You paid 20 also but I buy it from you for $30 and you buy 8gb from newg for $80. Everyone should do this lol. -
Doesn't adding memory (not hp doing it) void the warranty(supposing for some reason they check)
-
That's not a bad idea except that I'll be paying $70 =|...If you buy it for $45 ($5 for shipping) we can have a deal, which is still good because Newegg sells them for $40, so for $5 more you can have proper dual channel..or I can buy your 4GB for $50 and then you can buy a new one from newegg
@spencer, nope not all all, they won't give you any support if the RAM goes bad since its not theirs, but most RAMs have warranties of their own. The rest of the notebook will still be under warranty -
yea thats what I was going for. It was late I was tired lol. Either way we both end up paying way less than all the people that upgraded to 8gb for $150.
-
Make it $40 cause at 40 either way we both end up paying $60 for 8gb of memory. Dont spend $5 shipping. I have seen memory shipped in envelopes with just cardboard on both sides to keep it from bending.

i have seen all 4gb 1333mhz sticks on hynix chips :- corsair,transcend,a-data.. its the pefect time to upgrade
Potential RAM deal for new Envy owners?
