    Hello,

I'm trying to fix an HP Omnibook 6000 (F2186KT) laptop for a friend. I had to purchase a new AC adaptor (PA-1700-02) (19V) (3.42A) for it to test.

When I plug it in it has 3/4 flashing lights on the front, the 1, 3, and 4 lights. The notebook also makes a clicking sound. The sound continues after the HDD is removed.

The AC adapter has a green led on it that is light constantly until I plug in the laptop. Then it flashes with the other lights.

I was given 3 batteries to test and after swapping them around a few times I heard a popping sound and the lights went off. It kind of scared me so I smelled the board and it was okay so I tried to turn it on.

It worked great booted into xp pro and I proceeded to backup her files and left to take a break. When I came back the laptop was off and the 3 lights were back on. I have tried swapping the batteries around again and removing all the parts I could like RAM, HDD, CDROM, and Batteries.

I plugged it in with just the ac adaptor and it still flashes and clicks. So I'm thinking the laptop can work just maybe needs a new battery or part. I did see the battery charging for while it was amber while xp was loaded but turned red then it was short while after that, that it shutdown.

The pc was very cool when I picked it up and checked the heat. Not sure if the fan was working at all though. Never heated up enough to kick on?

I've also tried swapping the ram into the other slot with no luck. I swapped the cd-rom for floppy drive, no luck. I hope I can fix this myself I've read about issues with power connections on the back of the laptop but they seem ok to me.

Any idea on the error codes the lights are giving me would help I have the manual off the site but it doesn't have this code just the meaning of the lights by them selves. which helped some what.

    Thanks,
    Bruce Lee Perkins

After further testing I was able to get a multi meter to test the ac adapter I found the volts to be 19.45V about 0.5V to high and the amperes
to be jumping around from 2.5A to 0A and its supposed to be rated @ 3.41A.

I also tested the laptop power jack for a short and found a .096 Ohms so the laptop is okay I'm thinking. And it has worked ok after I have seen these lights just not sure how or why it worked and don't now. Trying to get another new ac adaptor now.
