None of the power management features, including adjusting screen brightness, changing the processor speed, etc. work. They worked fine in XP, but after I installed Vista none of them do.

Does anyone else use Vista with a laptop like this? If the problem is a common and unsolvable one I don't want to bother with reinstalling and repair installs and whatnot...

All I could find from the HP support page and Windows Update.

so are you saying that the buttons (probably function keys?) you press don't respond? it sounds like you're missing your drivers for your function keys....unfortunately, i don't know how to get it.

That's very weird. I run Vista on my nc6400 (which supposedly has same BIOS as all HP's business range do) and all power management features work fine, except for the annoying ATI Catalyst bug where Powerplay doesn't change its status until a reboot.
The brightness keys are controlled by the BIOS ACPI implementation afaik, so it's more of a BIOS problem imo, which leads me to ask if you have updated your BIOS?

The problem isn't the keys per se. They move the display brightness slider in Vista. The problem is that that slider doesn't do anything. I'll try updating the BIOS again, but I've pretty sure I've already done that.

    edit:
Yep, already had the latest BIOS. Flashed it again just to make sure. While booting after flashing I noticed I could change the brightness when the Vista bootscreen was visible, but the moment it really starts (loads some drivers?) it defaults to the max brightness setting and stays there.

In Safe Mode I can change the brightness. The cpu seems to remain at 100%, but I'm not sure if that's normal.

So perhaps its a video driver issue?

Updated the ATI drivers, and now it all works. Weird.

I swear I had installed all the latest drivers previously. But I guess they released new ones since then. Thanks.
