I've been playing with my Hp dv6500t power settings and noticed something strange while using cpuz.

When ever I put the laptop on high performance mode, the cpu throttles itself to 1197mhz and a multiplier of 6x and comes up to 2000mhz and a multi of 10 or so whenever I open a program (photoshop etc), basically it dynamically adjust cpu speed depending on whether or not it's idle. With me so far?

When I put it on balanced or powersaver mode it stays at 1500mhz and a multiplier of 8x, no throttling down to a lower power state, etc it just stays put. now changing down to 1197mhz would save more power but it doesn't change the settings whatsoever.

Now am I confused about what exactly it is doing? is it supposed to stay at those settings even though it's in powersaver or balanced, or is it supposed to throttle down further but is just not happening? can someone explain if something is wrong and what to do if there is a settings problem?

    Thanks!

You can adjust the settings in Control Panel-Mobile PC.

Thanks for the response, but to change the settings I need to know what they do.

what I need is an explanation as to why my cpu isn't throttling during balanced or power saver modes and whether or not this is normal or if I have to change some setting what setting to change.

In the power plan options (advanced) there is a section that controls how high the cpu can go, and also how low it can go. Check the low limit for those other plans, maybe they are set to keep the cpu higher. That would be strange though.

for balanced minimun processor state is 5% maximum is 100% for both plugged and unplugged

for Power Saver: min 5% and max is 50%

the problem is that they both stick to 1596mhz at 8x multiplier. No throttling down lower than this for either.

Only Performance has dynamic throttling going from 1197mhz all the way up to 2000mhz. Now it seems to me that in Power Saver it should be able to throttle down below 1ghz to conserve power, but it isn't doing that.

Edit: I just plugged it in and noticed that when in power saver mode the Core voltage went down to 1.013 and a multi of 8x when I put on High performance mode it jumped to 1.288volts and a multi of 10x, that seems right, power save should undervolt the processor but it doesn't throttle it at all. I would think that slowing down the processor would also save energy...?

It doesn't really sound right, but I have not actually checked all of those properties when my system is in different states. I usually just go by if the fan is running or not. What are you using to get that information? CPU-Z?

Stop using CPUz it always display that you cpu is runnig at 1.5 when it's not. Download PC Wizard 2008 here
