I think the power supply (the bit inside the laptop/motherboard) for my laptop is broken (and possibly the battery as well).
Basically what happens is, I turn on the laptop (with the battery in it) and run it off the AC supply, but after about an hour or so, the AC supply cuts out and it runs on battery power. So I remove the AC adaptor from the back of the laptop, and plug it back in after about 10 mins or so and the battery starts charging. But then after half an hour or so, the AC cuts out again.
I've tried to run the laptop on AC only with the battery out, but as I say after 2 hours, the AC cuts out and the laptop turned off completely.
Does anyone know how I can get this fixed or replaced? Or should I just save for a new computer/laptop? The laptop is a Compaq Presario R3145EA.

Sounds like what happened to my old T40. Only way is to contact Compaq, and if it's not under warranty, it could be an expensive repair.

It's probably a connection issue. If it heats up, it loosens and cuts out. Call Compaq/HP or if you have the guts and a soldering tool, open it up and try to find the culprit.

Yes, it looks like the soldering for the A/C connector on the motherboard has come loose. This is a problem with the design on older HP/Compaq notebooks. Usually soldering the connector should fix the problem, but if it cant be soldered then you can alternatively use a HP all in one cable which connects to the expansion port. This includes a power connector and can charge the laptop without any issues.

I suggest that if you are under warrenty do not try and solder it as your warrenty will void -
I have bought a used adapter off eBay and this seems to have solved the problem. Thanks guys!

There is another one here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/COMPAQ-PRESARIO-317188-001-316687-001-18-5V-6-5A-UK_W0QQitemZ170044379584QQihZ007QQcategoryZ31513QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Just realised you started a topic with the exact same problem as me! Turned out it was the adapter (the 'brick') that was faulty. Hopefully your problem will be sorted out by getting a new adapter as well!
