I have a compaq presario v6000. Recently my laptop has been going in and out of battery power. The little light at the connector goes on and off. Sometimes I have to jiggle the connection, sometimes the wire to get it to go back on. If I jar the wire or power supply slightly it goes off again. Will a new power supply fix this or is there another problem?

My friend's Gateway did that. Turns out one of the solder joints broke off inside the power adapter. If you jar the wire without moving the plug in the socket of your laptop, its a 99% chance the power supply is bad. You can get a power supply for cheap on eBay.

You need to fix the motherboard power connector. Most likely it has bad soldering there and need to be fixed by professional technician.
