    I bought a Compaq 8510w from a university and it has got a lot of preinstalled engineering programs. I'm wondering if in case I need to reformat my laptop in the future, how can I install back all these programs, I can't find the installer files.

    didn't you get any install/recovery discs with the laptop?

    If you don't have the installer CDs you won't be able to reinstall the stuff after formating.
