I've got a Presario 1710TW that I flashed to the 1720US firmware. I think the 1700 series is pretty much the same. I got this laptop with a bad HD and no restore CDs. I replaced the HD, but it appears there is a small hidden partition on Compaq HDs that have extended firmware or something?

My problem:I've installed Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon and WinXP Pro on separate partitions, but there appears to be something wrong with the ACPI that controls the fan. This laptop seems to get very hot, and the fan DOES work fine, it just seems to have some sort of software issue that disables it most of the time. Only when it get SUPER hot does the fan turn on, and then it gots VERY hard for a short time. This behavior is the same in both Ubuntu and XP Pro.

I've been led to believe the restore CDs have something that will restore some type of "hidden partition" that contains the extended firmware to restore this fan function? Is this true? Does anyone have a Presario 1700 series restore CD they could loan me?

You need to contact the vendor, as sharing those CDs is tantamount to illegally sharing a Windows license. Sorry, but thread closed.
