    Hi all,

My friend asked me to take a look at his daughters computer. After a few hours and after doing a clean install I finally figured out why the heck the computer keeps beeping and beeping. Its as if the laptop's "u" key is continuously being pushed down. I disconnected the laptops keyboard (just left my external keyboard plugged in) and the "u" letter is continuously being typed. This leads me to believe something is wrong with the motherboard since I disconnected the laptops keyboard.

Anyone else have any thoughts on what this could be?

I have been messing more with the laptop. I started to type a bunch of keys on the keyboard and it stopped just typing the "u" key over and over. But as soon as I rebooted it started typing the u key again. I am still not sure if its the motherboard and or the keyboard now. :(

Hmmmmm im thinking its the motherboard or windows. Did you try reinstalling windows. Maybe new keyboard drivers? I have never heard of this problem before.

Well I did reinstall windows. I also disconnected the touchpad from the motherboard along with the keyboard and the uuuuuu's continue. If the keyboard was the culprit here I think disconnecting it would fix the problem but it hasn't.

Just thought I would update everyone. I went into the laptops bios and there is option that has something to with the ps2 functionality. It was set on auto and I instead set it to the other option (both I think/I forgot off hand but there are only 2 options) I then rebooted with my external keyboard plugged in and the laptop works so long as I don't touch the keyboard on the laptop.

I am still left wondering if the motherboard has a problem or the keyboard. Again the "u" does continue to type itself even with the keyboard disconnected which makes no sense.

If it keeps typing U without the keyboard attached, the problem is obviously not in the keyboard. My guess is that something on the motherboard went south.

That laptop is getting pretty old and I don't think it would be cost effective to get it fixed. If your friend's daughter doesn't want to replace it, she could use it with an external keyboard just as you have. Disconnect the internal keyboard so that any accidental keypresses won't start typing u again.

Hey jimbob thanks for the reply. That is my initial gut feeling as well.
