First post here, and thank you in advance for any input offered.

I am considering purchasing for $200 a used Presario 3000 with a Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.4ghz, 448mb of RAM, and a 60 gig hard-drive, and the seller just dropped it off for a one week trial. My interest in it is for it's wireless capabilities, but it is not recognizing my LINKSYS wireless-G router or my neighbor's weak signal that my girlfriend's Macbook recognizes. When I go into network connections, it says the HP WLAN 54g W450 Network Adapter is operating properly, but it's not recognizing my router. Also, the light on the top of the keyboard that has the antenna symbol on it above the power button is not lighting, as well.

    Any ideas?

Additional info: it needs a new battery, and it has an intermittent back-light issue of which I have not recognized yet.

I'm not sure it "has wireless" as you put it. The seller says it receives wi-fi, and when I access the wireless network manager it says the HP WLAN 54g W450 Network Adapter is enabled & operating properly. Although when the window drop downs asking to select a network there are none listed (recognized).

"Iis wireless switch turn on ?" -- I didn't know there is a switch to actuate for wireless reception. Where might this be, sir?

I will add that - in his house -the seller only had connected the laptop to the internet by way of ethernet. He has no advice.

GREAT CALL, Andy. Thank you! It is FN+F2 to activate the WLAN receiver. I did some research and found this below. Am I interpretting it correctly in that this laptop will not receive wi-fi w/o a "Wi-Fi PC Card?" I ask because the seller has said otherwise. He honestly is not that knowledgable, and with this laptop receiving this LINKSYS WLAN I am thinking maybe it could receive wi-fi, as well. I would go check in a hot-spot, but I would have to buy a battery which I am not going to commit to doing until I make the decision to buy the laptop.

"Wireless 802.11b networking (Wi-Fi) is also unfortunately absent. Compaq says it will offer Wi-Fi in future Presario 3000s. For now, you'll have to settle for a less convenient Wi-Fi PC Card that will fill your single slot, which prevents you from simultaneously adding other cards such as Bluetooth."

What do you think about this notebook for $200?

Only things I recognize wrong so far are, as I mentioned earlier: the backlight issue (I have now experienced it once not light upon a reopening, but upon closing & reopening it lit), the battery needs replacement, the little plastic plate protecting the card slot is missing, and it seems the two speakers on the top are not working; only the two on the bottom.

Well, then thank you for all your other assistance. I'm not looking for a fight, just curious as to anothers opinion on the value of this laptop. I am not a techie. I am not in the know. I do not follow the market for used laptops, and as such have no idea as to an approximate value. It seems like a good deal to me w/a 2.4ghz Pentium4. Again I'm no techie, and I realize its RAM is weak, I realize the machine is 5 years old, I realize I have to buy a battery & deal with the top speaker situation, and I realize it's huge. Just curious as to your & ANYONE ELSES opinion of whom might chime in.

I think you asked if the machine came with a wi-fi card or "air-card," and if so, the answer is no.
