I can't find too much information on this laptop.

It was dropped off to me in October and I was asked to "fix it". The person that dropped it off said Geek Squad diagnosed it as a failed hard drive. After a week of rigorous hard drive testing - scans and transfering large files I couldn't find anything wrong with the laptop.

I asked what the laptop was doing that made him bring it to geek squad - he said just a black screen when booting up. That would leave me to believe it's the motherboard. Anyway, i still haven't figured out what is wrong with this laptop ... or what is causing this problem ... It wont' do it for me

I tried contacting the owner and I cant get ahold of him.

The only things that are wrong with this laptop are bad battery (common for an older laptop), a failing cooling fan and really lose and wobbly screen.

How can I get access to the cooling fan to see if I can save it at all?
How do I tighten up the hinges?

When I turn the laptop in it boots into windows. According to him, on occasion it doesn't do anything. I've been testing it on and off since October 07 and it has always worked fine.

Type in the Serial numbers on the bottom of the laptop on www.hp.com

    It should get you somewhere

Maybe a loose cable or something since you mention "wobbly screen". Did you reformat the HD after it was given to you?

Go on to the HP site and type in the model number. Sometimes enough searching will get you to the tech manual....

Its acting like the hinge is broken or falling off. The lid will move around if I shake the laptop ... which it probably shouldn't do.

I didn't reformat the hard drive because there's nothing wrong with the laptop as far as I can tell.
