My ancient C500 fan is noisy, a constant slight grindy noise. Its been like this for months and I cant take it anymore. Can I clean or replace it w/o too much trouble or is it time for a new laptop? Looks like I'd have to take off the whole bottom to get at it...which Iwill do, if it will shut the damn thing up.

Cleaning the fan will help, but to get it back in top shape also oil the fan's bearings a little. That should quiet it down to "brand new". Use thick oil, or grease, so that it stays in the bearings instead of spraying all over the place.

I couldnt figure out how to really get at the fan to clean it good or lube it. After I got all the screws out there was still something holding it on just center of the fan but darned if I could tell what. I got the back off far enough to reach in with tweezers and pulled out 2 giant hairballs though. It is quieter but not quite like new. And it doesnt run constantly, lol.
But I'd like to get in there all the way and do it right someday. -
Are they any tutorials on getting to the fan? Is it done from the bottom or from under the keyboard?
I am suffering from a noisy fan also and the way it sounds, don't know how much longer before it freezes up.
Thanks,
glenmore
