Friend has this laptop and the screen just sent black. I checked the blink codes(1) and it comes up with the "CPU not functional" error. It's no longer under warranty and I have no problem trying to fix it if possible. Can I upgrade the CPU or would I have to get the same one that is in it?

Not sure it's worth repairing since the cpu costs just as much as a new laptop.
