I have been trying, with "limited" success, to disable these annoying "one-touch" keys on my Presario CQ62 laptop. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium.
The designer failed big-time here, because they get pressed in-advertantly often when Tab or Shift are intended.
They are in a column on the left side of the keyboard.
Listed below (image on the key, followed by the app they open)
"envelope" key Windows Live login, or MS Messenger
"DVD" key Cyberlink PowerDVD 9
"globe" key My default browser homepage (startpage.com, in my case)
"printer" key Print driver dialog box
"calculator" key Windows calculator (I actually like this one, cuz it doesn't get in the way)
The envelope key was super annoying, because after I pressed it once, Messenger opened up every time I logged in to Windows 7.
The envelope and printer keys don't do anything anymore because I uninstalled ALL the Windows Live services (including Messenger), and I don't actually have a printer.
I am willing to fiddle with the registry, but I have no idea what the exact codes are for these 5 buttons.
I tried using Randyrants.com free "Sharpkeys" application to try to re-assign or disable these but am only able to turn off the "calculator" key.
Special bulletin! : Sharpkeys is able to identify, and disable all but one of the "one-touch keys" (of course it is the most annoying one...... "DVD" ...... I want to re-map it to the Tab key).
Here's the list of what Sharpkeys identifies these keys as (in order):
1. App: E-mail (E0_6C)
2. (still searching)
3. Web: Home(E0_32)
4. Key: P (00_19)
5. App: Calculator (E0_21)
For some reason Sharpkeys cannot identify the "DVD" button.
Perhaps these codes can be used to tweak the registry later, if needed.
Note:
Disabling the "printer" key also disables the letter P on the regular keyboard (I turned it back on)
Sharpkeys can also be used to re-assign "most" of the alternate functions for keys F1 thru F12, which is great cuz I don't like having to hold the "fn" key every time I want to use the regular function keys.
Good luck, and backup your registry before attempting this.
