I am trying to get to the top memory of a Presario R3000. I have the directions (just some pictures from Compaq), but I can't seem to remove the plastic piece above the keyboard after removing the 3 screws on the underside. Any help is appreciated.

Here's a link to the HP/Compaq service manual that describes how to remove the strip cover above the keyboard. See section 5.9.

Did you have success replacing the top memory in your machine? I too have a R3000 Presario and I am looking to upgrade. How much memory did you put into the machine? Any major problems? What kind and how much memory did you put in?

    Any hlp is great thanks

If it's the AMD-based Presario, I recommend Crucial (Micron) PC2700 memory. Some of the recent R3000z/zv5000z series machines have had trouble with PC3200 (HP ships with PC2700). I have a pair of Crucial 512MB PC2700 sticks in my zv5000z (same guts as the R3000z).

    I have the intel R3000 it is a P4 3.0 GHz.

Not sure how to tell what memory it should take. I have read some places that say 2100 and some places that say 2700. How can I tell what the max is? The manual says 1GB but I question is that 512 MB in each slot or 1GB in each slot max?

    thanks

The easiest thing to do is to ask Crucial's memory configurator on their website. Buy what it recommends and they'll guarantee compatibility.

The external memory controllers in P4 machines aren't as picky as the high-performance integrated memory controllers on the Athlon 64 CPU, so if you find a good deal on 512MB PC2700 SODIMMs locally, go for it. Run MemTest86+ afterwards for about half an hour to verify the new configuration.

I also have an Intel P4 R3000 3.0 GHz. According to Compaq's tech support each slot can take up to 1 Gig (total 2 Gig) and it should be PC2700 memory. You should confirm this for yourself, because your model may be different. I did not replace the top memory yet. I currently have 256 top and 512 bottom. If and when I replace the top I will post the results.

    Thanks Everyone for your thoughts.

I have ordered 1GB of PC 2700 and I going to install it in the lower memory slot. I will post my results when it arrives.

    Thanks
