Sams club has a Presario R3399CL with some really cool specs.
The main thing I am worried about is the video card.

How good do you guys think this will be for demanding games like Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 ?

It'll choke on Doom 3 and HL2 unless you turn the detail levels down. The first-rate CPU just can't compensate for the 3-year-old GPU. You can make games playable or pretty but not both.

These are great machines for getting work done but they're just not for hard-core gaming.

    Thanks Brian,
That's what I was afraid of.
    Any suggestions?

At this price point it looks like my best bet will be the emachines M6811

I am also looking at the emachines M6811, but is the Mobility RADEON™ 9600 really that much better then the GeForce 4 440 Go?

Yes. The 440 Go is better than shared memory video, that's about all I can say for it. Think GeForce 440MX on the desktop.

It sure does look like a HP notebook product line refresh is imminent though. The zx5000 series just disappeared. The Compaq equivalent is gone too. Something's up.
