I had to re-install XP without the recovery disc and I'm having
trouble finding 2 of the drivers. One is the mass storage controller and the other
is the SM Bus controller. I've been to Compaq's website and couldn't find these
2 drivers.Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Looks like you need to install the chipset drivers. What are the specifications on your laptop?

Just to add a bit to Miner’s post, you can find newer drivers for your V2000z by using the L2000 support page found here:

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...us&dlc=en&submit.y=7&submit.x=6&lang=en&cc=us

The drivers for the L2000 (which is a black V2000z) were updated the longest into the production cycle. Also there is an update there to the card reader that will allow you to use up to a 4GB card. Last, as far as the Video & Chipset drivers (ATI 200M), I never used the ones from HP and downloaded the newest version directly from ATI/AMD. You’ll find that they’re much better than HP’s.

You can also check drivers for the L2300 CTO. I think the last of the LiveStrong units. Vista drivers and Vista Bios too if you're so inclined.

Had the same problem, and looked for a couple hours to find the right solution. Thought I'd share for the poor unlucky person following after me.

First, this is a good explanation of the SMBUS situation:
    articles.networktechs.com/114-p1.php

In this case, the smbus drivers are *included* with the video drivers. There are two files (SMBusati.cat and SMBUSati.inf) in the folder SBDrv\SMBUS after the video drivers get extracted. These are what you need to point the device manager to in order to update the drivers.

The file you're looking for is called sp31101.exe and it's available here:
    h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-33855-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=228&product=1131716

The v2000 listed on HP's web site is for an Intel CPU and an Intel Chipset. This model has an AMD ML-30 CPU, and an ATI chipset. On the bottom of the laptop, the sticker does say just "v2000" for the model. It's definitely not the same as the "v2000 CTO" Download the video drivers from above, and that should give you what you need for the smbus controller.

(The forum isn't letting me post hotlinks. If you paste the above into your browser URL it should work.)
