I just bought a spare Compaq Presario V3000 (V3100 CTO). It's currently running XP with a M430 (slow) processor.

My research suggests this machine’s HP 417036-001 motherboard (I checked the numbers on the board), with a current f.39 bios (which I just flashed), can support a socket M Intel T7200 processor.

Anybody out there have experience swapping out a cpu on a V3000? Can it run this core 2 duo chip? I've googled, and can't find a straight answer.

Will this go? Can I expect that the bios will recognize the new cpu and automatically adjust the bus (533 to 667), the clock, and the frequency? Are there any jumpers on these boards, or is it all automatic?

Anybody running any V3000 series with a T7200?

    Intel® Celeron® M Processor 430 (1M Cache, 1.73 GHz, 533 MHz FSB))

    Sockets Supported PPGA478

    Intel® Core?2 Duo Processor T7200 (4M Cache, 2.00 GHz, 667 MHz FSB))

    Sockets Supported PBGA479, PPGA478

I have no experience with that laptop but I'd double- and triplecheck the T7200 that you receive correct CPU model.

    Thanks, KLF.

Yeah, I double checked the model number of the chip. It is a socket 478/socket "M", for sure, so it will physically fit OK. These sockets are really confusing. If you are shopping for one, it is best to examine the photos of their pin configurations very carefully. After a bit, it is easy to identify the various missing pins of particular chips. Their patterns are quite distinctive. There is a great resource chart, to check Intel part numbers and their chips' sockets/speeds at:

List of Intel Core 2 microprocessors - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

When I cross-checked the various ebay chip listings, I'd say that 30% of them have mis-identified their chip's sockets--so your admonition to be careful is good advice. You must check part numbers against Intel or wikipedia specs.

I'm mostly concerned about the board's ability to adjust the fsb and the clock multiplier settings (automatically?, or jumpers?). I have heard back from one ebay seller that he took a core duo chip from a computer with this exact board--which improves my confidence that a T7200 (core 2 duo) will work.

I'm only waiting for ebay copper shims to arrive before I start tearing the computer apart. I'll know soon if this new chip will run, or not.

Any other wisdom/advice would be appreciated. I know that many V3000's have fallen to the dreaded Nvidea overheating plague. One of my motivations is to clean this computer's fan and vents, so it can breathe properly.

I'm typing this on my old V3100 CTO (Intel T1350 cpu), which has survived--and given me great service--since I bought it new in 2006. Still going!

As often happens, I've just discovered that somebody has walked this path before. Here is a thread from a previous discussion that answers many of my questions.

I only wish that member ELECTROSAM had posted a final update, to tell us if his upgrade was successful. As I said, I'm about to try a T7200 (ebay $26) on this machine. I'll try and remember to post the outcome (unless I can't get the thing back together, and I'm too embarrassed to talk about it).

The cpu-transplant went well. For anyone searching for the answer to this question, YES, this V3000 Presario board will run core 2 duo chips. Going from a M 430 to a core-2-duo has made my formerly poky old laptop a lot more agile.

A word of caution, though, don't get all but a handful of 92 screws back in place and then discover you are missing LED board ZIF cable restraint. I plumb lost this restraint. It is tiny--about the size of a small fingernail clipping--and it is gone, gone, gone... (anybody in this wide world want to PM, and offer to mail me one?)

So, except for losing my LED board lights (at least until the cat coughs up the zif restraint--or somebody donates one), I'm pleased with the outcome.
