I have a Compaq Presario X1000 that is several years old, and while watching a movie one day, the screen began to show wicked artifacts and then the system just shutdown: permanently, it would seem. Now, all that happens when the power button is pressed is that the power and wireless lights turn on, the hard drive light flickers a couple of times, and then nothing.

I have this gut feeling that it's the video card, but have no justification for that conclusion. Is that a problem whose symptoms would be those that I described? If not that, then what else should I try?

    Thanks

I remember that many people had the same problem with the presario x1000 a few years back. The issue is hardware related. In all these situations, the notebook needed to be serviced by the warranty.

Unfortunately, this seems to be a message to upgrade...

I've already got an upgrade. The point is that it's still an okay laptop, and if I can fix it with a cheap part off eBay then why not? It's perfectly usable (or would be if it weren't broken). Here's a link to what seems to be the same problem:

It would appear that they agree with you, admlam, that it is a problem with the "hardware"...
