Several weeks ago, the fan on my X1000 has started cycling on an off on very frequent intervals (30-60 seconds or so). After reading a few posts on loose heat sinks, I decided to disassemble and inspect. I did not find anything loose but I did notice that there was virtually no heat sink compound between the heat sink and the CPU chip. So, I bought a tube at RadioShack, pplied it and presto, fan stayed off...until yesterday. Now the fan comes on early after boot and seems to stay on for long periods of time. It's less annoying than clycling on and off but I think that something is wrong. The thing should at least behave consistently as the environment the notebook is in has not changed.
