    I remember running a diagnostic while on the phone with HP one time, regarding my DV 9740 notebook. The service rep. told me to shut down, startup, and press F something while starting up, to reach a diagnostics menue, that included a hard drive test.

    Does anyone know which F key this is?

    On my Dell, I think it's F8, but I don't know if it's the same for HP.
    If not, you could always try them all!
