I just had the two most frustrating conversations with hp customer service ever. One was 45 min and the other an hour and a half! I was trying to use a coupon for a laptop i got on August 4th. The coupon is said to expire the 20th and the first call and half of the other had them telling me it expired August 17th. Finally i asked to speak to someone higher up and after she looked the coupon code up she told me she wasn't sure when it expired but that i couldn't even use coupons under price protection. She told me this after i proved to her that it did indeed expire on the 20th. She also said she was the highest person up i could talk to, couldn't do anything abouth the people who told me earlier that i could use coupons, and couldn't even give me anyone else i could talk to.

So my question is. Has anyone else been able to use coupons that they found after buying their notebook?

A few people have been lucky enough to do so. Some of the people that were not able to, were given $150-200 back by HP.

I have found with HP that as long as you call them before the build is complete (i.e. before it has shipped), they are typically very good and responsive at applying coupons and refunding the difference. Once it ships, it becomes a little bit harder.

Not really. There have been several people who got money back after their notebook already shipped.

I was unsuccessful at my attempts to get the $150 credit back from a coupon I found just a week after my purchase. After talking on the phone for 3 hours and to 3 service reps. They finally allowed me to talk to their manager, who claimed she is as high up as I can get and she is in charge of everything. And then she goes on saying that their (HP's) internal policies for Price Protection does not include coupons, and that the best she could do was to credit me 10% of my purchase price ($85) so I wouldn't return their product and re-order it with the new coupon (re-stocking, shipping is a mess for them as well as for me). So there you have it, congratulations to the few who were successful at their attempts, but it seems HP is using the coupons to avoid paying up for price protection. It's cleaver really, instead of lowering the price named on the website, they use coupons to lower the price, so people cannot take advantage of their price protection program.
If you are planning to call HP to credit a coupon using the price protection service, you are very unlikely to succeed, but I would suggest trying anyway to at least get the 10% back.

The number to call is 1-888-999-4747 or 1-866-807-7196 by the way, they both bring you to the same place, just call and hit 2 when the machine talks, then 4 when it talks again, then wait for a service rep. to talk to you, have your order info. ready as well as your order number. Don't be afraid to ask for their manager.
