I just got the dv1635 a couple of days ago and I was wondering, for those with the SATA HDDs and DVD burner(or i guess just any optical drive), under the primary IDE channel, there's just one device there which is the optical drive right? Should it be running on Multi-Word DMA Mode 2? I guess that since at most, it's just a DVD burner, it doesn't really need anything faster than that....but I just want to see if other dv1000 DVD burners are in that mode as well.

Hm, I think you should have Ultra DMA mode because you will not achieve high read speed otherwise. Have you enabled the SATA drvie under BIOS? Also check your drivers. Here's a discussion about desktops but you might find it useful: http://www.bleedinedge.com/forum/archive/index.php?t-13657.html.

Try uninstalling the IDE channel and rebooting. It happened to me twice, once for the HDD and once for the burner - after heavy load operations the transfer mode of the device would degrade to PIO and the notebook became hardly usable. I uninstalled the IDE controller, rebooted and it was back to UDMA mode

Yep, the SATA is enabled, there's no problem with that and the HDD. :) I did try uninstalling and reinstalling the Primary IDE channel, but the DVD writer is still in DMA mode 2. But after looking around, I think that should be fine because the max. read speed for a CD is 24x which is only like 4MB/s, as well, 8x for a DVD is only 10MB/s so I don't think the drive will be able to hit that 16MB barrier. :)

EDIT: K, after going to Futureshop and checking out some of their HP laptops there, I saw that they were on Multi-word DMA mode 2 as well. So my laptop is fine then...which is good to know. lol
