Hello all,
I sought your advice a couple of weeks ago (see my previous posts) and ultimately decided on the dv2416us from HP. No complaints so far...I'm very happy with the computer.
With that said, there is one item that is troubling me a bit, and I'm hoping that some of you can help me out:
When I closed the lid of my old Toshiba, it did nothing to the functionality of the computer or the internet (except darken the screen, of course). When I close the lid of the new HP, I lose all of my internet connections (AIM, ability to connect to mail server, Southwest Ding, etc...). When I open the lid back up, I can reconnect to everything immediately and with no need to reboot. But I want to receive email during the day, I want to keep my AIM online....and I don't want dust to settle on the computer when I'm at work!
I've been through the power settings via Control Panel...nothing allows me to adjust settings for a closed lid. Quite honestly, I'm not sure if the computer is "hibernating" or "sleeping" when I close the lid...but all functionality resumes immediately the instant the lid is opened. I'm connecting via a Linksys router and via Cox cable in Oklahoma.
Any help you can provide -- any "tweaks" that I can make to prevent this from happening would me most appreciated.
Kind Regards,
Marc

Control Panel > Mobile PC > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does.

Your computer is sleeping when you close the lid. Are you using vista or xp? under vista go to Control Panel > Power Options and look under "Choose what the powers buttons do" for a lid setting if you didn't find anything (like my V3417LA) then under your current power plan select "Change advanced powers settings" and look for a lid configuration setting.

From what you are saying, it sounds like your current setting is Sleep when lid closes.
Don't know which OS you are using, but in Vista, here's the power setting for lid:

Tried it, many times. The link is there in the control panel, but when it click it, I'm presented with the following two options:
- When I press the power button (On battery / plugged in)
- When I press the sleep button (On battery / plugged in)
Nowhere does it offer me any options for the lid! Still stuck.
Edit: No options offered for the lid under advanced settings, either. -
In that case, click Start, Control Panel, Hibernate, uncheck the Enable Hibernate option, click Apply, click Power Schemes and under Plugged In set the Standby time to Never, and adjust the Display and Hard Disk settings as you see fit. Click OK to save the settings.
I would set the Display to turn off after 10-20 minutes and keep the hard drive at Never.
That will keep the computer awake, the drive spinning, with the display off.
But for a laptop, I don't see the need to keep it awake when you're not there - heat is the evil killer of electronics. You'll get your email as soon as you get home anyway, unless you forward your email to another POP service when you're not home or something similar.
