I started replacing the keyboard in a dv5000 (it had half a can of Coke dumped on it). I was ok following the instructions in the HP Service Guide until I tried to remove the keyboard frame. According to the instructions I should be able to slide it towards the back of the computer (not sure how far it should really slide) and then lift up the rear edge. The keyboard frame won't slide more than 1/8" and the rear is stuck down tight in the middle. I was afraid to go further for fear of breaking it.

If anyone has experience replacing their keyboard, is there some trick to removing the frame? I'm wondering if the dried soda may have just cemented it down.

    Thanks

Hi, I have just checked your manual and I can only see one screw holding the keyboard down. As long as this has been removed the keyboard should slide back and up. On looking at the pictures there appear to be two ribbon cables connecting the keyboard to the laptop, I can only presume that the coke spillage has somehow got these "stuck".

If this is the case, I personally would apply a small spray of WD40 underneath to see if it gently lifts the keyboard off. However as this is not my computer, wait and see if anyone else has a suggestion as all suggestions are good.

I think that spraying WD40 on electronics would be Bad? (Bad for bicycle chains too.)

I haven't taken apart that particular series.

Assuming it's the coke that's sticking the keyboard down, and WD40 is too harsh, I wonder if heat would work? I could try a hair dryer. Or does anyone know of a safe solvent that would be effective loosening up the dried coke?
