I purchased an HP Pavilion dv4 back in Feb. of this year. Ever since I've had it there has been some kind of problem with the drive. First it would burn a DVD but wouldn't read it. And then finally it wouldn't read anything. SOOO I took it Staples to take advantage of my warranty and they told me it was because I had software designed for XP on there. I haven't found anything that says you can't do that. I also had an Acer and a Toshiba laptop with the same "old" software running on Vista but never had ANY problems with either.
Can anyone tell me if this is a problem with HP and Vista or is it truly the "old" software I'm using?
Thanks!

Don't listen to those staples techs your drive is dead and needs to be replaced. Their explanation of "old software" is all rubbish. If it truly was the software at fault then windows would complain everytime you try to use it and as you said it worked fine on your previous Acer and Toshiba (there is nothing special about HP's Vista editions).
My previous Acer had the same issue happen to the DVD drive. First it would write a DVD and then could only read it 50% of the time. Then eventually it could no longer write or read discs the drive still worked but it wouldn't recognize any disc I put into it. Since my warranty was out by the time this started happening I had to replace the drive myself.
Your dv4 needs a new DVD/CD drive. Don't let staples tell you any nonsense you have a warranty for a reason. -
Thanks! You're awesome!
