I have had my HP HDX16 for almost a year, probably 10 months. I can still send it in for repairs because the warranty is still in place.

Recently the fan has started to make some funny noise and it sounds more like a grinding sound that is subtle but still noticable. I was thinking of sending it in for repair, but when I sent my computer in last time they formatted everything just to replace the screen when I told them not to, so I really would just see if I can repair the issue myself and save myself the trouble of having to reinstall and download everything again.

How easy will it be to take off the bottom to get to the fan? I already blew air into and that made it go from loud to subtle, but it seems like it might be grinding against something or hitting something. Sometime if I tap on the area to the top left of the power button it will stop it for a couple of minutes. Any ideas or suggestions will be helpful. Thanks.

You're sure it's the grinding fans? or It's from the HDD?

    Mine is from the HDD.

Trick is, unplug your HDD and run your laptop on bios by leaving your fans on to see if it's your fans.

Can you explain how I would do what you just said?

Edit: I had the idea to just turn the fan off, and it';s def the fan that's making the noise. So how can i get it to it now?

This is really complicated process to open up HDX and replace the fan. Sounds like your fan bearing issue just my old Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop...

HDX is probably the hardest or complicated to open up seriously. A lot of screws and you have to remove everything, monitor, wireless card and etc. in order to get access to your mainboard (mobo).

You pretty much need to replace the whole heatsink. I had it opened but i didn't pay attention on how exactly those parts stick together. The heatsink is huge and heavy.

Here is the manual instruction to open your laptop. Make sure you are discharged by touching any other metal piece before the process of opening it up.

Flip to the page 41 in your PDF,

Note link will be gone in 2-3 days.

Yeah I was looking at the manual and it looks damn complicated to the point where I just wont even try. I figure I will just send it in and see how that goes. I did turn off the always on fan option and that seems to fix it, because when it does come on it doesn't make that sound.
