I have had several problems with my NC6400. They are not related to the hard drive, but mostly related to the phyrical components. Sometimes, the screen remains black once the lid is opened, the computer seems to be on, but nothing on the screen. Another shell that I had, just simply would turn off. Has anyone else had these kinds of problems?

I used to have the same problem with my nw8440 regarding the lid. Pressing the lid switch would bring the screen back to life. As a permanent fix, I went into the power options, clicked on the "Advanced" tab, and then, under the "When I close the lid of my portable computer" drop-down menu, I selected "do nothing". Hopefully, that will work for you.

As for the the machine turning off, I'm assuming you mean that the machine is randomly shutting down without warning? If so, download either CoreTemp or Speedfan (or some other internal temperature monitoring utility). It could be that your machine is overheating.

Thanks. This is helpful. I did switch the properties to do nothing when you close the lid. The screen still would simply go blank.

As far as the random shutting down goes, the problem was that the laptop did not get that warm! It simply would shut down.

Regarding the lid, I'm assuming the screen stays blank, even after you've opened the lid? I'm wondering if the lid switch is sticking or starting to go out. The lid switch should be the little thingy (sorry, don't know how else to describe it) just in front of the left hinge. Check to make sure it's not sticking.

As for the shutdown issue, just because the laptop doesn't feel hot doesn't mean it's actually running hot internally. The only surefire way to tell is to download an internal temperature monitoring utility (like CoreTemp or SpeedFan).

    Good Luck!
