Okay, I have an old HP Pavillion laptop--the zv5240us.

It has two fans but only one works. Is there any way for me to manually turn on the second fan to be sure that it is a mechanical problem?

    OS: Windows XP SP3 32bit
Yes, I have the most recent BIOS.

All fans should turn on at boot (this is normal behavior for most notebooks, though, I can be wrong for this particular case). Else, remove the fan (or fan connector) and apply a low voltage to it.. (no more than 5volts) and it should spin.

Wouldn't a "system check" help diagnose the cause of this problem?
