I am hoping someone on here can help me with a problem that has cropped up after I installed some new RAM in my HP DV6700. I replaced my original 2GB of DDR2 PC5300 RAM that came in the notebook with this stuff from NewEgg.com:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134605

Window's shows 3GB and everything runs smoothly. I put the computer into Hibernation and got this message once I tried to resume:

    "Windows Resume Loader

Your system's memory configuration has changed since it entered
hibernation. If you proceed, the data needed to resume from hibernation
will be lost. To preserve this data, turn off the system power, restore
the orginal memory configuration and reboot the system. Otherwise, press
<enter> to delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu.

Delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu."

I press enter and than am taken to a menu to start Widows normally, in safe mode, etc.

I made sure the computer was shut down before I installed the RAM and wasn't in Hibernation or standby. I re-installed the factory RAM and Standby/Hibernation worked just fine. I then shut down, installed the Kingston, started up Windows (which reads 3GB), and still get the same message when resuming from Hibernation. Does anyone know how fix that issue? I like to use Hibernation since the startup time is quicker. Thanks for your help.

    1. What size is the hibernation file (hiberfil.sys)? Is it as big as the RAM? If not, is there enough free disk space for it to be big enough?

    2. Are you running XP? See this hotfix: KB909095.

Thanks for the response John. I searched for hiberfil.sys and didn't find anything. Do you know where I should look for that? The RAM I'm using is Kingston 4GB, I have 150GB+ of free space on my C:, and I'm on Vista Premium. The Hibernation/Standy works just fine with the original RAM installed, just not the new stuff for some reason.

Has this only happened once, or on multiple occasions since you installed the new RAM?

Also, since you installed more RAM to the system, I would also increase the Pagefile.sys size. You can do this by right clicking My Computer-->Properies-->Advanced-->Performance Settings-->Change Virtual Memory. The minimum should be how much RAM you have installed, and the max size should be 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have installed. Windows will tell you at the bottom the Recommended amount you should set for the max size.

The problem will happen any time that I resume from Hibernation/Standy with the new memory installed. I went to the Virtual Memory and here is what it says at the bottom:
Total paging file size for all drives
    Minimum Allowed: 16MB
    Recommended: 4591MB
    Currently Allocated: 3361MB

I'll mess with those settings and see what I come up with.

Hiberfil.sys is normally in the root of the C drive. However, it may be hidden unless you set Explorer to show the system files.

The size of the paging file should be irrelevant. The rule-of-thumb of 150% of physical RAM is a relic from days of rather less RAM. 100% should be enough when you have 3GB or more RAM. Personally, I use a fixed size paging file to avoid it getting fragmented and hit performance.

vista has had various hibernation issues. Have you applied SP1? It contains a dozen or so hibernation-related hotfixes although I can't see any which fit the description of your problem.

You could also try the 3GB RAM combination and see if that's OK.

I changed the "currently allocated" value to 5000 and still have the same problem. I'll try SP1 and see if that helps at all.

I installed SP1 and the problem seems to have been fixed. Hopefully it will stay that way. I appreciate the help!
