    hi,

the hard drive in my unit spontaneously turns on & off. often it just turns off for a few seconds (the notebook is completely silent during that btw :)) before it spins up again. this only happened shortly after getting out of sleep mode so far (so it's probably related to that), but it's still very annoying.

also, is the hard drive fan supposed to be that loud? i don't think that i even hear the main fan spinning, all i can hear is the constant spinning of the hard drive fan (sounds like running water ... :()

maybe some other 6910p owners can share some experience and possibly even provide a solution to the hd-problem... anyway, thanks

one question aside: is there a program that allows the user to turn off charging?

Perhaps not much help here, but I've noticed the HD spinning first down when going to stand by mode and then restarting for just a second or two before finally going to stand by.

I've replaced the original Vista Business with fresh XP install, so I can't be sure about the connection to the OS in the system...

First of all check the settings in Power options, there's a power-saving feature that allows the computer to turn off the drive after a given period of inactivity. This might explain the periodic spinning down and up.

As for the noise, your notebook only has a single fan for CPU/GPU/chipset, there's no fan in the part where the hard drive is mounted. Certain level of noise emitted by the drive is normal (especially if it boasts higher rotational speed like 7200 rpm). However, strange sounds or spinning up and down randomly may also indicate a failing drive. It might be a good idea (if only as a precaution) to check the condition of the drive with a diagnostic tool - there are various utilities to check the S.M.A.R.T. status (something like self-diagnostics) of the drive or you may download for free a diagnostic tool tailored directly for your drive from the website of its manufacturer (Seagate, Hitachi, Fujitsu, Toshiba, ...).
