Two days back I fired up my dv8000 and got a screen giving me start up options,... standard start up, a start up option promising to go back to the last good condition of the dv8000, and three different safe mode start ups. None of them worked. Shut down the night before wasn't problematic or different from any other shut downs. I tried repairing selecting the auto repair options, they didn't work either.

As a last resort, I decided to re-install XP on a freshly formated partition. I follow all the steps but when the process gets to the part where it copies system files to the start up partition to use in re-installing XP it fails to copy at least a third of these files cleanly. Not necesarrily the same files on subsequent attempts,...seems to be random.

I used another master XP Windows disk thinking the disk was faulty,... same thing. From time to time I get errors stating that the CD drive may not be connected,... that can't be it. The CD drive reads fine up to that point. I also got a error message saying there may be a problem with the Hard Drive,... so I re-formated the drive and tested the HHD using HP's F10 option at startup.

    I'm stuck. Any suggestions? Thanks!
