I cant read certain DVDs on the 6910p. but the DVDs work on my other HP notebook.
I hear the DVDs spinning, but stops after that.
What is wrong?
Cant be the DVD, since they work on another notebook.
My notebook is only 3 weeks old. Will send it to the HP Service center in a couple of hours time, if they cant find out what is wrong i will demand a new unit.
-
So exactly what happens? Saying something doesn't work isn't very descriptive.
-
The application & recovery DVD provided was meant to Autorun so i can choose what to install and what not to.
I have used it before a couple of time, it failed the 3rd time i tried to use it.
Just came back fr HP Service center, they gave me a bull**** !!! reply. " Maybe the DVD wasnt meant to autorun?" If it wasnt then why is there a command for it to autorun?
I told them it works on other notebooks, they tried, and it works on another notebook, except mine. They blame the HDD, ask me to leave it for 3 working days.
So much for being no.1 -
Typically autoplay is controlled by the operating system, not the drive. So you put the recovery disc in and it does not pop up the install GUI?
-
It didnt pop up the install GUI.
Best thing is, the reocery dvd works on another notebook, the GUI poped up, but not on my notebook.
Tried a new recovery DVD, same thing, didnt pop up.
Really weird.
Clean installed, tried again, same thing, doesnt pop up.
It used to work though. -
You mean my OS is corrupted then?
-
No I think he is asking you if you turned off autoplay, its a function of the OS not the drive. The drive itself does not dictate what to autoplay and what not to autoplay, its a setting in the OS. So the question is, did you disable autoplay in the OS? If you go to the shortcut for "My Computer" can you see the drive and explore the contents of the disk?
-
Or go into the disc and run the setup file.
-
Nope, it's set to on, the service support guy even checked the Regitsry.
He doesnt know what is wrong.
All he can offer is, give me a new HDD ( what for i dont know ) and then try the DVD again. He says if it cant autorun again, then the DVD wasnt meant to autorun. I told him to wank off.
If it can run on another notebook, why not mine? I asked for a new unit, excuses and excuses. -
I can view the contents, but what's the point? I want it to autorun so i can see from the GUI what to install and what not to.
-
I hear it SPIN, then stops, then nothing. -
Anyway thank you for the replies. I am doing a backup now, and will send the notebook to HP tomorrow for the new HDD, since it's free.
And will proceed from there.
Thank you once again, cheers. -
If your DVD drive is working fine, i.e. reads/writes other CDs/DVDs, then don't bother with the Driver DVD. Just download the stuff off HP's web site. That way you can choose what to install without any bloatware. If you have VMware installed, it disables AutoRun.
Some things you may try:
How To Enable/Disable Autorun (Windows XP)
Open Windows Explorer by pressing the Windows + "e" key.
Right-click the desired CD-ROM and select Properties from the menu.
Select the AutoPlay tab.
Select each item from the pulldown list and for the Action to perform, select "Take no action" to disable autorun, or pick the apporpriate action to take if enabling autorun.
Select OK.

So lets get this straight:
The DVD drive cannot run the setup executable (presumably 'setup.exe') when a run command or through windows explorer or Windows Autorun.
If this is occuring on multiple DVDs then it could be the DVD drive (why on earth would it be the HDD anyone?!).
I had a desktop internal DVD writer that had trouble reading various CDs and DVDs. It would spin up then stop, but also cause my system to run vary slowly when it was accessing the disk. I got it replaced under warranty and have not had any problems since.
My bet, if it can't open setup.exe through windows explorer, the run command or using Windows autorun then it would be the DVD drive, not the HDD drive. -
The HP notebooks I've seen lately have all the software for the machine located in the SWSetup folder on the machine which would include the drivers and apps. I would suspect the 6910 would be the same, but haven't seen one.
-
-
Yeah the drivers and apps are on the Application & Recovery DVD.
Very handy, as you can choose what to install fr there.
marmion, the HP support guy made me sick. the setup fule wont load...i already told him it's the dvd problem, i guess that's the problem when you hire idiots.
Other cds are fine, but i am worried this might end up for all dvds sooner or later. -
I have downlaoded all the Drivers fr the HP site.
Now for software, do i need the HP ProtectTools Security Suite ?
Or any of the software on the site? -
-
now i am plugged in but not charging
damm !!! -
I think you are overreacting a little. It's most possibly a Windows setting screwed up. Have you tried the fixes as I've mentioned before?
Protect Tools is not needed unless you need the fingerprint reader and TPM encryption stuff. It is also needed to change BIOS settings within Windows (but you can do it on F10 boot up).
It doesn't charge when the battery is at 95% capacity. It only charges below that. The light turns green above 90% and turns off after 95%. -
Thank you, it's ok now...
-
I installed all the drivers but didnt download any of the software from the website except for intervideo windvd
i think everything is ok now...
no unknown hardware in the device manager
